Review: Ycee – Su Mi | Don’t Dare Think Ycee Is Not Hard

The first time we really got something of note from Ycee was his 2015 hit, Jagaban (the remix of which featured Olamide). Since then it’s non stop dropping of joints; from singles to covers, Ycee has used the last 10 months very very well. So when we got word that his mixtape will be dropping in the coming months, we immediately knew the last few months were all leading to something special.

The first single off that tape is Su Mi, and gives us a bit of an insight as to what the tape will be like. Unlike his previous joints, this one has no traces of anything to do with mainstream afro-pop, and is all straight hip-hop, you can even say ‘Trap Music’.

First off the production by his brother, Beats By Karma, features computer synthesizer sounds that makes the beat sound like something out of a video game. It works very well for Ycee especially with his kind “trap” flow (for lack of a better word).

Lyrically, this one is pretty nice from Ycee dropping punchlines like “I am a stoner, I like me a chick that can handle a boner… I am a menace, smashing you chick leave her open like janet/I am the truth, body bags’s all I leave in the booth“. You can tell from these lines that Ycee is doing something different with his upcoming mixtape, The First Wave.

Overall, Su Mi is dope! It’s not your run of mill commercial hit track, but as an opener for his tape it couldn’t be much better. The video wraps it all up very well, and gives one a sense of what he’s about for this tape. Ycee has already proven that he can drop the commercial hit tracks, now he’s showing us his pretty fierce on the mic as well…. You know… in case you didn’t know.
