“There’s something I use every time I wake up. We rise by lifting others. Everybody wey dey on top this stage, no be say dem be random people oh! I have helped them,” Davido preached a gospel in 2018 when he bagged a Headies award.

He shared an inspirational epistle on stage that made a lot of sense. To this day, I believe Davido is living by his gospel.

Anyways, this piece is not about Davido but Mavin Records CEO, Don Jazzy.

THE RISE OF DON BABA J & MO’HITS

Michael Collins Ajereh known as Don Jazzy, was born on 26 November 1982. A record producer, audio engineer, record executive, singer, songwriter, entrepreneur and philanthropist, ‘The Don’ took the industry by surprise.

Don Jazzy rose to limelight when he and D’Banj founded the popular record label, Mo’Hits.

Mo’Hits housed some of Nigeria’s best talents; Tiwa Savage, Wande Coal, D’Banj, D’Prince, Dr Sid and couple of others.

Combined, these artists dominated the Nigerian music industry, unleashing several hit tracks under the guidance of Don Jazzy.

Mentioning all may take the entire page! LOL!

ROAD TO MAVIN RECORDS

After several months of speculation and wild rumours, Don Jazzy confirmed via his Twitter account the break-up of Mo’Hits. That was the birth of Mavin Records.

The label signed fresh music talents who took advantage of new-school music and created a lot of buzz; Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, Di’Ja, Ladipoe, Tiwa Savage, D’Prince, DJ Big N and most recently Rema and Arya Starr.

These talents have also had their pound of flesh and are still conquering new grounds.

In a recent trend, one will notice that the music CEO and highly revered producer, Don Jazzy, is constantly using his platform to promote upcoming talents.

Musicians, comedians, and entrepreneurs, have been given fair chance to feature on the celebrities page, mostly Instagram.

This is not something many celebrities will do but Don Jazzy is bridging the gap between ‘already made celebrities’ and ‘upcoming talents’.

Social media platforms; Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, have given rise to a new era and several acts have taken advantage of that.

However, the ‘problem’ of ‘reach’ remains a determining factor in the game.

With the following Don Jazzy has, he helps new talents get better exposure thereby improving their reach on the social space.

The likes of Brain Jotter, Its Nas Boi, Lawyer Kunle, Bro Bouche, Broda Shaggi, Mc Lively, Romeo, Mr Macaroni, Crase Clown, Josh 2 Funny, Its Femi Babs and a host of others have benefited from this gesture.

CHALLENGES MR JAZZY FACED

Recently, the music CEO ran into some problem with labels. The issue bordered on copyrights as he was accused of using content without permission.

Don Baba J had to release a short statement saying talents who wanted him to promote their contents for free should kindly talk to their managements to avoid further issues.

This, nevertheless, has not deterred Don Jazzy for doing the good he had already started.

Popular Nigerian blogger and producer, Idoko Salihu aka Jaguda Pikin, is quoted as saying; “When people ask Don Jazzy “who you epp?” He can confidently say he paved the way for a lot of upcoming artists. Since some people de say nobody paved way for him.”

I indulge you, take out time and visit Don Jazzy’s Instagram page to get a better understanding of the good work he is doing.
