VIDEO: UK Has No Input in Afro-Beat Whatsoever – Burna Boy


The year 2018 has been a splendid year for Nigerian singer and songwriter, Damini Ogulu, widely known as Burna Boy.

One fact is, Burna has kept us grooving to fantastic tunes from him. The release of his OUTSIDE album to Gbona and most recent, On The Low.

In a recent interview with BeatFM London, the YE! crooner did well to air his opinion on the whole “Afro-Beat, Afro-Pop, Afro-Fusion” misconception.

According to him, he has always had his sentiments when ever the topic came up, reason being that his entire family is involved. “I know what it is. It is not what you hear today,” Burna said.

He further mentioned music legend Fela Anikulapo as the only act to have done “Afro-Beat”, all others are “Afro-Pop”.

When asked what he thought about the numbers his recent album and track “YE!” amassed, his response was , “I don’t care about numbers.”

In his words; “Why not care more about the music, how many lives I’ve touched, or how my songs inspire science, sports or how people feel when I sing.”

Finally, Burna Boy made something very clear. He stated the UK could not take credit for Afro-Beat as they only accepted it as a genre of music.
