The choice of Atlanta to host the 2022 Headies award symbolizes the expanding popularity of Nigerian music in the United States, according to US Ambassador to Nigeria Mary Leonard.

The 2022 edition of the award ceremony, which will be held on July 2 in Atlanta, is the 15th edition and the first to be hosted outside of Nigeria.

Ms Leonard praised the developing relations between the two countries’ creative industries at a reception sponsored by the US Mission in Nigeria before of the Thursday event.

The Ambassador said:

This year’s Headies awards will highlight the growing U.S.-Nigeria ties and the vast potential of Nigerian musicians as cultural exporters to the African continent and beyond

Cultural connection, she added, strengthens the US-Nigeria strategic alliance by fostering long-term relationships between artists and spotlighting both countries’ vibrant creative populations.

The Headies Music Awards’ Executive Producer, Ayo Animashaun, also addressed the occasion, saying that this is the first year the Headies will be hosted outside of Nigeria.
