The Weeknd Sued Over Copyright Infringement


Abel Tesfaye popularly known as The Weeknd has been slammed with a lawsuit based on copyright allegations. According to the Hollywood Reporter, The Weeknd, alongside his producers are being sued by Cutting Edge Music for illegally sampling his new hit “The Hills” from the film “The Machine” which was release in 2013. The lawsuit also includes Universal, Warner Chappell, and Sony/ATV.

According to sources, the little piece of evidence was a supposed twitter direct message which was sent on the 9th of March in which The Weekend sent to the original producer of The Machine soundtrack Emmanuel Nickerson, saying; “I sampled your music might make it 2 the weeknd next album”, the message further stated “Huge fan of what u did 4 the machine movie!”.

The plaintiff is being represented by Thomas Brackey at Freund & Brackey, as they are pressing copyright infringement and unjust enrichment charges, they are also seeking for damages alongside a permanent injunction.

The Weeknd recently received 7 nominations for the Grammy awards in 2016.
