Jaguda Artiste Of The Month: Banky W

Olubankole Wellington, widely known as Banky W, has emerged our JAGUDA ARTISTE OF THE MONTH for the month February.

He started his record label E.M.E in 2002 while studying. In 2009, he left the US for Nigeria and established his record label in Lagos where he signed artists like Niyola, Shaydee, Skales and, Wizkid to the label at the time.

His breakthrough debut studio album, Back in the Building was released in 2005.

The singer after a successful career in the music industry, looked to expand his horizon by venturing into the movie industry. He debuted in his first movie in 2016 with “The Wedding Party” which was a block buster.

Sequel to that movie, Banky immediately announce he and Adesua Etomi (who is now Adesua Wellington) would be getting married. Adesua also played a lead role in the movie, “The Wedding Party”.

He got married to Adesua Etomi traditionally on 19 November 2017 and subsequently did his white wedding in South Africa on 25 November 2017. He had a successful skin cancer surgery on his shoulder in 2017.

Banky would later announce the dissolution of E.M.E Records in February, 2018; he said the label is now a talent management company focused on creative marketing, advertising, PR and brand events.

He named his wife Adesua Etomi, DJ Xclusive, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and, Tolu ‘Toolz’ Oniru as the first set of clients of the rebranded company.

The popular saying, “Nearly cannot kill a bird” is true, however, this particular shot nearly took out its feathers.

The EME boss took a big step in his life by delving into politics.

November 11, 2018, Banky official announced he would be vying for the seat of House of Reps, representing Eti Osa Federal Constituency under the Modern Democratic Party (MDP).

He went from door to door to campaign to the halves and the halves-not. He was active in debates, town hall meetings, kicked off a strong social media campaign while his theme was “Hope 2019”.

So the Nigerian singer and actor ventured to defeat the main opposition. He stood against Omotesho Bakare of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and, Ibrahim Obanikoro of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), which he did.

Banky W defeated the APC and PDP in his polling unit (MDP-575; APC-454; PDP-540), proving he was a hard nut to crack.

However, after collation the results, the singer conceded defeat to the APC opponent by publicly congratulating him.

The entertainer has proven beyond reasonable doubt that the entertainment industry and its elements can bring about an impact on the political playground.

Take it or leave it, Olubankole Wellington has dealt a blow and history would remember him for it.
