Legendary Nigerian drummer, Tony Allen, is dead, BBC reports.
Refereed to as “Afrobeat Pioneer”, Mr Allen was Fela’s drummer and musical director.
According to reports, the cause of death is yet to be determined but it has also not been linked to the novel coronavirus.
Born in Lagos, 1940, Allen learnt how to play the drums all by himself.
The BBC reports that he learnt by mimicking American jazz drummer, Max Roach.
His paths crossed with afrobeat legend, Fela Kuti, in 1964.
He was instrumental to the creation of Fela’s several hit songs including ‘Gentleman’ and ‘Zombie’.
Tony Allen died at age 79.
