Two To Review: Waje – Omini Knowest + Tunde – Take It Easy

This week we review two artists at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of momentum gains. While Waje is soaring to greater heights as the year goes by, Tunde (formerly of Styl-Plus) is going through somewhat of a rebranding process after the fall of the group that reigned Nigerian music in the early 2000s.

Let’s get into it.

Waje – Omoni Knowest

The fact that Waje has a wonderful voice has never been in doubt, neither has the ability to try new things. In that respect, I’d say it was a bit of risk going in this direction for Waje in terms of the overall theme of the song, but it paid off big time.

The beautifully put together, but simple E-kelly beat is given the lyrics and melody it deserves from Waje and everything comes together very well. Even more impressive is the strength of Waje’s delivery; often times songs get drown out by the beat and hook, but in this song you clearly get the content of what Waje is trying to deliver. The Fela influence in some parts of the verses drives the song to our sweet spot.

The tune might not be the banger hit track, but it’ll definitely make the list of good songs put out by Waje.

Tunde – Take It Easy

Times do change. In 2004/2005 it didn’t seem like anything that Styl-Plus touched could go wrong, and they deserve all the respect for ushering in the new age of music. With that said, you have to have the ability to adapt with the changing times. Evolve or dissolve, as they say, and it seems that with this new tune, Tunde didn’t quite get that memo.

While this song might (a big might) have worked in 2005 or 2006, it somehow doesn’t work now. The music industry has upgraded so much since then, and this tune is not really going to cut it. You can tell Tunde still has the voice for it, and no one can question the talent, but the beat, the production quality, and the melody are really sub par to be honest. The lyrics are good but gets ruined in the midst of everything.

I really liked Styl-Plus, and nothing will make me happier than seeing Tunde make a serious comeback with a huge tune, but this unfortunately is not it.

  1. You really need to understand music to pass a comment, seeing your comment on Tunde a former member of Styl-plus is a slap on the face of those who brought Naija music (RnB) to the world. Give it more time and you’ll know you’re just a learner.

  2. It is sad to know that talentless folks like you say irritable stuff about the hard work of people like Tunde(Stylplus)who strives to make the world a better place(through music) for you and generation unborn.#Takeiteasy speaks to me.
