Reminisce – EL Hadj | The Review

reminisce album elhadj

The ‘Kako Bi Chicken’crooner turned Alaga Ibile who then became Baba Hafusa took us on a trip to Mecca. His personal Mecca as you may call it, but it’s worth the ride. Without a doubt, Reminisce has been one of the most consistent rappers we have at the moment. Lyrically, he is on his own lane and you have to respect that. There is always a reminder of that fact on every song he is graced to be on,on this album he proves himself once again why he should not be matched with average emcees.

EL Hadj, sometimes spelled Hadji, Haji or ElHajj. A title which is originally given to a Muslim person who has successfully completed the Hajj to Mecca. Reminisce titled this body of work ElHadj because of his intended pilgrimage to Mecca, but before that he takes us on his own personal journey.

The album starts off with Alasamalekun(Peace Be Unto You), a friendly greeting to his fans and also a middle finger to the doubters all along reminding them he is pretty much around, and also if anyone wants to square up bar to bar.i’d love to see that, more of that actually. What a Guy. A great introduction to keep you glued listening to the seventeen track LP. Here comes a narrative of his adugbo, his hood;putting nigeria on the spotlight. Where i come from explains the everyday life of an average Nigerian suffering, and how politicians are living good regardless of the hardship around. The super production from Sossick continues on Ibadi, giving us that stoners music vibe. I bet you never expected a track like this, very catchy.

That Track you can dance to,Konsignment will give you that feeling to Lose your home training. With a solid production from Jomane, never heard of him/her but this lovely. Sarz creeps back in with I.N.B.G,you cannot go wrong featuring Mr Eazi on a song, he has that unique spice he adds to your tune.He doesn’t disappoint on this one, giving reminisce a lovely hook to flow easily on. He goes explicit on “One for the Road” featuring Solidstar, expressing his lustful affection to his woman who he hasn’t seen in a long time, reminiscing the last time they made love and also pleading getting one for the road before she leaves again. Tspize gives a blending sound on the production, “ORI” basically asking God for more blessings; a perfect morning prayer.

You never know one’s story until they tell it, Reminisce remembers it all on this track. From his playful childhood days, his favorite TV shows, losing his mother in his teenage years. The pain, the disappointments from family members and most especially his love for his father. I feel like this track narrates the whole concept of the album, I remember it all as a little kid, I’m sure you do too. Whether it’s beautiful or sad, we all have a story. This is his story and he narrates it the best way he could, you’d shed a tear for this.

In Yorubaland, there are people who are gifted praising people especially kings, they call them Agunrin. Terry Apala is the Agunrin on this project, with his distinct unique voice hailing reminisce for his originality in hip hop, he gives a breath of fresh air on the album. Personally i felt the track should be longer, sounded more than a skit to me.Pheelz mr Producer did a fantastic job on this track, bringing back the old vintage vibe. If you are a fan of Ebenezer Obey, you will know where the inspiration came from. You’d think reminisce and olamide are about to go off again, instead they gave us a groovy joint.

The Old boys of ID Cabasa reunited on “Simple boy”, giving us that thrilling joint like old times. Adigun is claiming to be a good man to his supposed lady apparently, but he is looking at her nipples and Britneys. The Production on this track is Lovely, big ups to Producer Tyce. Like the Popular saying, “Ball On Them, Because If Na You Dem Go Ball On You“, On a daily Basis Baba hafusa is getting money and stunting on those who underrated him back in the day. He goes down memory lane about the hustle, now it’s his time to enjoy and stunt on everyone. Money is time

The Legendary Innocent Idibia, known by all as 2 baba recruited to give us his piece of advice on ‘Nobody knows’, the humble beginnings only you can tell that story, but people are quick to hail you when the hard work pays. With his Delightful Afrobeat voice, they birthed a glorious track. Reminisce goes back being explicit in “Owo Re” With Selifa back into the room, using Food metaphors to excite her with his sexual Prowess. He Recruits his Protege,Oladips on “Oloun”, one of the best songs on this project. Reintroducing Ola Dips was the perfect idea, giving him the floor to show his lyricism and also to stomp his ground;an avenue to let the critics and doubters know he is not playing around.

The Prayer is to be Larger than Life, he reflects about living a life beyond Material things, all vanity. He strips away his laudable street perona for a deeply human side, with the assist of Sojay delivering a beautiful hook.

Closing the curtains of the album, he recruits Ice Prince, Seriki and Oladips on this cypher session “Feego”(500 Naira) brought out the beast out of these rappers, bars upon bars and everything comes together perfectly well.

No Matter genre of music or craft you are passionate about, it’s essential to practice your craft.By doing this, you will continue to improve yourself and eventually be better than most others at what you do. Reminisce’s consistency has shown he has grown so much. Artistically, you didn’t get this kind of magic his last album did you ? El Hadj is a masterpiece,It has shown Alaga’s versatility as a brilliant recording artiste. Its lyrical content is heavy and the production is fantastic.
