Top 30 Nigerian Songs Of 2016

After an eventful year, Jaguda is proud to bring to you the top 30 songs that rocked Twenty16. This is a synopsis of our top most impactful songs released during the calendar year.

Drawing up this list has not been easy because Twenty16 recorded a low output of songs and a downgrade of quality. Fewer songs with lots of competition to make the list.

Nevertheless, in the midst of all that there are few songs that really stood out during the course of the year. Let’s jump right into the list.

1Tekno – Pana

Tekno Pana

Should this really be a question? Tekno’s Pana has been the most recognizable Nigerian song this year. It’s crossed boundaries, and any fan of Afro-Pop will point to this song first as the one. Krizbeatz did something special on the beat, and Tekno with his massive musical talent maximized the potential in the beat and production. Simple. It’s the song of the year.

2Kiss Daniel – Mama

Kiss Daniel dropped his debut album, New Era, this year and proceeded to dominate the music scene in Nigeria with hit after hit. The biggest one was Mama, and it’s one of the hottest songs of the year. You can make a legitimate argument for it being #1 also. No coincidence that it’s google’s most searched Nigerian song of 2016.

3Phyno – Fada Fada

phyno fada fada

In a year that was pretty forgettable for hip-hop, Phyno was a bit of a shining light. Phyno teamed up with his musical bff, Olamide and together they dropped this classic “ghetto thanksgiving” joint. Fada Fada is the type of song that hit to every generation in Nigeria, and you can say was a hair short of being played in churches. Like ‘Connect from 2015, expect Fada Fada to still buzz well into 2017.

4Olamide – Who You Epp

When you kick start a trend, and get hundreds of freestyle from your record, you know you’ve hit something special. By his standards, Olamide has had a relatively quiet 2016, but this record that dropped earlier in the year is arguably the biggest hip-hop record of the year. Really, Who You Epp?

52baba – Oya Come Make We Go ft. Sauti Sol

2face linked up with Kenyan group, Sauti Sol, and ended up giving us one of the most complete songs of 2016. Lyrically it’s outstanding, the message is top notch, and the vocal performances from everyone. In addition, the video does the song justice in a way that not many videos do.

6Humblesmith – Osinachi Remix

The team really debated if this should make the cut, and we eventually decided on it. The main reason being that even though the original was released in 2015, the remix featuring Davido (along with his baby mama drama) took the song to ridiculous heights. I mean the line “No be by force to go Dubai” will no be forgotten anytime soon.

7Reekado Banks – Oluwa Ni

oluwa ni

“Gbedu wey dey burst brain”. Reekado Banks immediately justified his controversial Next Rated Award win over Lil Kesh with this hit record, Oluwa Ni, that is very deserving of top 10 spot for 2016. Going with mavin producer Altims, the two created something very magical.

8Mr Eazi – Skin Tight ft. Efya

Mr Eazi being nominated for the Headies Next Rated award is no fluke. He’s had one heck of a 2016, and his biggest 2016 record is definitely Skin Tight which features Ghanaian songbird Efya. Skin Tight is sexy in every sense of the world. The beat, the presentation, the video, everything is simple sexy.

9Patoranking – No Kissing Baby

No Kissing Baby

A Nigeria x Ghana music combo from Patoranking and Sarkodie. Patoranking dropped his long awaited debut album, God Over Everything, this year, and the standout track (besides the previously released ones) is No Kissing Baby which features Sarkodie. It ranks at number 9 on our list, and we doubt there’s any contest.

10Timaya – Money ft. Flavour

Timaya M.O.N.E.Y

It seems every year Timaya has one or three massive hits. He’s the model of serious consistency in the music industry, and might fly under the radar sometimes, but his songs are always blazing on the charts. His collaboration with Flavour, Money, wraps up our top 10, and falls in line with the catalog of hit songs by Timaya.

11P-Square – Bank Alert

After putting aside siblings rivalry and family squabble, Nigeria’s favourite group Psquare dropped something to compensate fans. Bank Alert it was, since it release folks have been dancing to it. The song currently has over 8M views on YouTube.

12Tekno – Diana

Tekno - Diana

Pana was a phenomenal success by all records and statistics. TripleMG golden boy struck the airwaves with another big tune Diana. You already know, Diana is a listener’s choice.

13Zoro – Ogene

zoro ogene

Ogene is a fine blend of culture best interpreted into music. Zoro conquered the east where he is from and went on to win over the west with Ogene. The buzz so far makes it stand at number thirteen on our list.

14Dbanj – Emergency

dbanj emergency

Emergency has been a shining gem and a career saver for D’banj, earning him nominations at the Headies Awards. The P-loops produced afrobeat tune made us fall in love with D’banj again and we damn love it.

15LAX – Gimme Dat

Wizkid’s protege has had a good year so far, special thanks to his club banger “Gimme Dat”. This tune is a big party starter. If you’re a nightlife patron I’m sure you have heard this jam a good number of times.

16Tiwa Savage – If I Start To Talk ft. Dr SID

Tiwa Savage

Tiwa Savage! Yes the African pop queen is called savage for a good number of reasons. Amid her marital woes Tiwa Savage made her imprint in the industry with an album and hits. If I Start To Talk earned a decent amount of radio and TV rotation this year and the music is top notch.

17Simi & Falz – Chemistry

falz simi chemistry

Falz and Simi make magic whenever the get to work together. “Chemistry” is a stand out track from their joint EP. They both came through on this one, and sent a lot of underlying messages in the track.

18Flavour – Une Soul ft. Phyno & Zoro

What would you have expected from this combo. Each of the individual artiste on the track has done a lot to promote their indigenous Igbo culture, this was not an exception. This song is another win for indigenous music.

19Koker – Kolewerk

Choc boy koker has had a good run this year. Creative and comic lyrics with great beats and the song was off the hook. Everyone seems to know the lyrics, Koker has made  a sing along street anthem with kolewerk.

20Solidstar – Wait Remix ft. Tiwa Savage & Patoranking

Solidstar x Tiwa Savage x Patoranking = GOOD MUSIC. Solidstar made his tune “Wait” even bigger with a remix, the result was in fact worth all the effort. Everyone delivered and music fans had another tune to induce ecstasy.

21Kiss Daniel – Jombo

kiss Daniel NEA awards

What an amazing year for G-Worldwide super star Kiss Daniel. Jombo is one of my fave tunes of 2016. The production, lyrics and video are all A+. Kiss Daniel no be fluke.

22Sugar Boy – Hola Hola

Another G-worldwide act made it here, Hola Hola is a jam that turns you on instantly. What a pity Sugar Boy was not nominated as “Rookie of the Year” for the Headies Awards 2016. Nonetheless, he had one of the best tunes this year.

23Remisnice – Asalamalekun

Remilekun level gan gan! Baba Hafusa proves he is hip-hop on Asalamalekun, he only prefers to flow in his Yoruba dialect. This is one of the best hip-hop tune you’ll hear out of 2016. The remix featuring Wale can also be substituted here.

24Phyno – Pino Pino

phyno pino pino

Amongst other things Phyno perfected his singing skill in 2016. Phynofino sang his heart out on this love/wedding themed song. Like you already know Pino Pino is a favorite at wedding parties especially in the east.

25DJ Spinall – Ohema ft. Mr Eazi

DJ Spinall again ooo… ladies! The famous Nigerian employed the services of Mr Eazi to make a song ladies everybody loves. Ladies and gentlemen, “Ohema” is number 25.

26Falz – Bahd Baddo Baddest ft. Olamide & Davido

Arguably the best and most Afro-trap jam out there. A big collabo consisting Falz, Olamide and Davido, who did their bid to make it a stand out jam. Bahd representing Falz, Baddo (Olamide) and the Baddest, Davido completed a trio of multi talented artists bringing their own flavour to the track.

27Ill Bliss – Nku ft. Flavour & Storm Rex

Veteran rapper Illbliss has worked very hard to get all the buzz he has enjoyed this year. One of his efforts deserving an applause is Nku ft Storm Rex & Flavous. In the early party of the year it was definitely one of the best songs out.

28Mayorkun – Eleko

DMW act, Mayorkun came into the Nigerian music landscape with a bang. Eleko is a firecracker and it banged even to the disbelief of critics. Eleko has been a huge success from heavy radio airplay to impressive YouTube views. That makes it one of the most important tunes this year.

29Korede Bello – Do Like That

Korede Bello Do Like That

Korede Bello secured another hit for himself before the year 2016 peters out. Release in September, the DJ Altims produced number rose to become one of the most played songs on radio this year. Over 6M audio streams and over 3M 8M video views and still counting on YouTube since it’s release. If you ask me, this is big.

30Yemi Alade – Africa ft. Sauti Soul

What more can be said about Africa’s most paid female this year. Yemi Alade’s fame grew stronger as she released “Africa” a song featuring Kenyan boy band Sauti Sol. No need to say much, a song about Africa sells. Yemi Alade completes our list.

  1. To be very honest this list is trash, I am big kiss Daniel fan & I love mama but mama was not bigger than fada fada which in my opinion was d biggest song in Nigeria in 2016. Oya come make we go is 5. This list is a joke

  2. If I am to be correct, the list is not done in rank method..So i believe baron should have understood that.

If all that is done, this list cannot be wrong afterall…we even still dancing to some this current year

  3. abule-sowo was a big hit, and kolewerk remix was bigger than the original…i seriously dont understand what you guys are doing. i mean some songs here i no even hear. asalamekun by remi was ok (i know it because I am a fan) but it was not a hit!! owoblow was a bigger hit than asalamekun and even konkobility.

  4. Comment: to me i think kiss Daniel mama should have been ranked among the top five artist song the year instead of davido featuring escorba.
