JAGUDA’s First XI: If Nigerian Musicians Were Football Players

Ever pictured a soccer team with your favourite Nigerian musicians?

JAGUDA brings you first of its kind, a first eleven team of the season in a 2-1-3-1-3-1 formation. This list was put together considering two factors. The first, relevance in the industry. Secondly, the current form of each artiste.

Being likened to world greatest footballers, C. Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, our very own Davido and Wizkid, fit the shoes perfectly.

The assertion that Messi is pure talent and Ronaldo, hard work, is the same for Wizkid and Davido respectively.

Both acts have graced our music airwaves with nothing but excellent music. Undeniably, the Afro-Pop genre has been amplified both on the African and international scene’s, thanks to Wizkid and Davido.

However, both demi-gods had worked with top international music acts such as Drake, Zara Larsson, Vybz Kartel, Future, Kranium, Wale, Tyga, Meek Mill, Rae Sremmurd, Young Thug and some others.

TIWA SAVAGE, Mavin’s first lady, has continued to wow her teaming fans with her music and deserves to be our “Attacking Midfielder”. She continues to supply good music and while it’s no longer news that she is being seen all over the place with one of our strikers (her bestie), Tiwa is surely a force to reckon with.

She currently has a songwriting deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing and a management and publishing deal with Roc Nation in June 2016, which she later confirmed via Instagram.

YEMI ALADE, probably Africa’s most hard working talent in a long while. The Effyzzie Entertainment star is still very relevant as she has managed to push Nigerian music to a lot of Francophone and Lusophone countries in Africa. Yemi Alade has earned her position in the starting XI.

OLAMIDE, aka Baddo has been the most consistent Nigerian musicians. With seven studio albums under his belt, a long string of hits to his name, Olamide Adedeji is an indispensable player in our squad list. His music prowess makes him a vital midfielder in the team.

PHYNO, birth name Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike the Nigerian rapper, singer and producer hold his own in the competition stifle music industry. Phyno refined and finessed the Igbo rap movement from where Mr Raw and iLLBliss left off. He has one of the biggest fan-base in the country as evident in his annual Phynofest shutdown.

FLAVOUR, contemporary Nigerian highlife cannot be complete without having the muscled dreadlocks sporting singer in the mix. Flavour exudes the persona of a complete musician with a beautiful voice and an even better stagecraft, this makes him a very valuable player in the music industry.

D’BANJ, is one Nigerian artist that has contributed immensely to the current state of Nigerian music industry. D’banj and his old Mo’Hits crew ushered in a new standard in the game with banging music videos, huge endorsements deals, international tours etc. His sacrifices is the reason why Davido, Wizkid are were they are today.

BANKY W, Mr Olubankole Wellington makes a very decent defender in the Jaguda XI squad. The undisputed Nigerian king of R&B in his best days served us with some of the best vocals and R&B tunes. He is also well known as a former boss and mentor to Wizkid. He effortlessly sells Nigerian music with his affable personality.

MI ABAGA, self acclaimed African rapper number 1 and microphone magician. As far as Nigerian hip hop still thrives MI Abaga sits on the throne after all these years. The Chocolate City boss in 2018 won an award for ‘Best Rap Single’ at the Headies. The Mr Incredible has been sassing fellow colleagues and youngsters about keeping the hip hop culture 💯, the man indeed is a naturally defender of the culture.

The highly revered living Nigerian music legend Innocent Idibia when asked what he would have been doing if it wasn’t music said he would have made it as a goalie. That’s a comfortable coincidence as the ‘African Queen’ singer completes the squad as its goalkeeper. 2Baba’s contribution to the industry in his over two decades of active participation has been enormous. He is an elder, a mentor and role model to upcoming stars.

SUBs [Tekno, Falz, Kizz Daniel, Patoranking, Tekno, Simi, Niniola, YCEE]

Even as the full squad has been listed above, there are still a whole punch of talents who are very vital in our music industry today. They’re young, super talented and could come in at anytime to replace someone in the starting XI.

Tekno, is a big shot today in the music industry, it’s even amazing that he has been able to achieve all he has done without an album to his name.

Falz, has come a long way in the industry as a rapper, he is a talented bunch and his works speaks volumes.

Kizz Daniel, in less than no time the young record label executive would be selling out big venues outside Nigeria. He is tipped to replicate the successes of the likes of Davido.

Simi, is such an amazing singer as she is a songwriter. Her rise as been astronomical despite her genre of music falls in the alternative. She is already giving Tiwa Savage & Yemi Alade a run for their money.

Patoranking, since he debuted with ‘Alubarika’, Pato has managed to stand out in Africa and in far away Caribbean. He is one of those doing Nigeria proud.

Ycee, being a rapper in Nigeria may not be as rewarding but this guy manages to cut the big checks with his massive tunes. He has deep potentials that could keep him in the game for long.

Niniola, the beautiful singer has been very consistent with her style of music (Afro-house) and suddenly it has started paying off a great deal. Nini just bagged a BET Awards and she didn’t see it coming either. She is easily among top four female Nigerian singers.
