Our Jaguda Artiste of the Month for August is Adedamola Adefolahan, known professionally as Fireboy DML, one of Nigeria’s most bankable musician in the coming years. The past two years have seen the YBNL singer move from a rookie to a formidable musician with an already impressive discography.
One thing that leaves you beaming in admiration for the YBNL singer is that he is packed full of substance without the need for razzmatazz, there is a subtly confidence he wears because he knows the stuff he is made of. He is that package that fits the description and more when unboxed.
Thanks to Olamide and the entire YBNL team we have come to feed off of his nerve-calming Afro-Life music. ‘Afro-Life’, that’s the way Fireboy DML likes to describe the kind of music he makes. Judging from the quality of songs Fireboy has so far released, the hits he has made, his poise and how he carries out his business it isn’t hard to tell that the dude wants to stick around for a long time and he sure would.
2020 must be a bittersweet experience for the ‘Jealous‘ crooner and here is why;
For an artiste who gathered so much momentum towards the second half of 2019, more so went into overdrive in the last two months of the previous year, 2020 should have been explosive.
There is so much more Fireboy would have achieved in this year after releasing one of the best albums in 2019. ‘Laughter, Tears & Goosebumps’ had several hits and many good songs that would have been enough material for the artiste’s tour across Nigeria and beyond but for the global pandemic and lockdown.
Without losing heart, the singer in earnest began working on his sophomore album ‘Apollo‘ which he put out about two weeks ago to many rave reviews. On his new album, the singer opts to be more experimental with his sound while holding out a little taste of that ‘LTG’ we have gotten to like very much. At the moment some people are adjusting positively to ‘Apollo’ and many more will do so in due course, they will catch the bug.
Another remarkable thing to highlight about Fireboy DML is his strong work ethic which has not gone unnoticed. In less than a year he has shot himself into the realm of prolific artistes by dint of sheer hard work. There are some of his senior colleagues who are yet to put out a debut album, others have never left the debut album phase of their careers and there is he probably plotting a third studio project.
His thought process, thoroughness and execution stands commended.
Probably staying away from extravaganza is a personality trait for Fireboy or a strategy to build mystery around his art. However, he deserves all the hype he can get because beyond the surface his substance shines through like a gem.
It’s great news he has a music distribution deal with EMPIRE, nonetheless, we sincerely can’t wait to see him expand his reach beyond Africa, performing on some of the biggest music platforms, world tours and also bagging the awards.
