Psquare is more than just a household name in the Nigerian Music industry; the duo’s fame goes beyond the shores of their motherland to the length and breadth of Africa.
The Okoye twins are best known for combining singing with smooth dance steps to match as they confess to being hugely inspired by the late King of Pop Michael Jackson.
Since the advent of Psquare in 2003 the group has scored series of hit records from “Bizzy body” to “Bank Alert” and multiple bestselling albums and the records are numerous.
However, Africa’s biggest singing twins are gradually losing it on the age grounds, they aren’t getting any younger. Perhaps, sometime in the future, Peter and Paul will no longer hold sway because their time would have elapsed unavoidably.
As a matter of fact, a void would have been created when they actively retire.
Who gets to replace the famous Psquare?
Nigeria has several groups like Psquare in the country but one pertinent question seems to be who would take over from the masters of the game.
Would it be DNA, Hypa, or maybe Boybreed, what are the chances?
Both DNA and Hypa are relatively new in the Nigerian Music industry but Boybreed has been around for quite a while especially remembering them for their hit song “Slowly”.
DNA only became professional artistes after they got a contract with Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records in February of 2017. Meanwhile, before landing a recording contract, the twin brothers have been featuring in Nigerian reality music shows like Glo X Factor and the pioneer edition of The Voice Nigeria.
Hypa made their first entry in the Nigerian music scene in November 2016, with a debut titled “Alert”, and subsequently another buzzing jam “Asiko”. The group is not just made up of two persons, both HypaJAY and HypaRAY are twins like DNA, Psquare or Boybreed and recording artistes under Dreams Records.
With less than a year old in the industry DNA or Hypa stand a chance as heir to the legacy of Mr P and Rudeboy of Psquare. The members of both groups are young; hence time is their number one advantage. With a few right moves and hit songs to their respective names, they would already be on the path to replicating the success of Psquare.
The twin factor makes it easy for both groups to win an easy appeal before the Nigerian music lovers. Sometimes being known as twins easily gets you the needed favour. Nigerians can now have new options to their old favourite.
DNA seems like the most likely to snuggle into that spot because of obvious fact they are signed to probably the biggest label in Nigeria Mavin Records. Don Jazzy is a known industry heavyweight and a career catalyst hence they are tipped to succeed. Also, having gone through different music reality shows, DNA would have learnt a thing or two about making music and putting up an engaging stage performance.
Hypa may not have gone through the reality shows for lessons but the group can sure make a lasting impression on the music scene. An advantage they have over DNA may be that their record label can better focus on getting the best out of them since it doesn’t have many artistes on the roster. Hypa has street credibility which other boy groups may not be privileged to possess.
The field is indeed an open playing ground for whosoever would replace Psquare; however, DNA or Hypa is worth paying attention to.
