How Beyonce Brought Out Her Inner Osun Goddess At Her Grammy Performance

In case you’ve been under a rock for the past month, Beyonce is pregnant… with twins. Yes she is. So her performance at the just concluded Grammy Awards was one of the most anticipated of the night. Like everyone else, we were curious to see how she’ll pull off a performance heavily pregnant with twins.

And she wowed everyone by pulling something outstanding out of the hat. Unlike her regular highly energetic performances, Beyonce opted to take her audience on a spiritual journey of motherhood, and fertility.

However, to drive that theme home, she channeled in the Osun goddess. Who is the Osun goddess? Osun (pronounced Oshun) is the Yoruba goddess of the river and fresh water, luxury and pleasure, sexuality and fertility, and beauty and love. She is connected to destiny and divination. She is the patron saint of the Osun River in Nigeria, which bears her name. There is also a state in Nigeria named after her and the river.

Beyonce’s performance started out with a five-minute intro with holographic imagery projected on a giant screen. This featured depictions and imagery consistent with what you would imagine of the Osun goddess and other depictions of her.

The performance morphed into a scene of Beyonce sitting on her throne performing with many of her backup dancers dressed as her maids, while she adorned a massive star designed crowned.

In the end, it all came together perfectly, and left a lot of the audience is awe. To those watching on tv, it took a bit of twitter trending for everyone to finally get how spiritual and deep this performance.
