The 13th Annual Harvard Africa Business Conference was held on February 18th and 19th at the Harvard Business School. The conference was organized by the African Business Club ( ABC ). This was a first class event which attracted attendees from all walks of life. The conference is the world’s largest student-run event focused on business in Africa. This year ABC broke their own record with over 1000 conference attendees. The conference brings together various participants including African students and business professionals from around the world, and provides an exceptional networking opportunity for business and community leaders, current and prospective Harvard MBA students and alumni, students from other graduate programs, and entrepreneurs.
The two key note speakers Leo Stan Ekeh and Tsega Gebreyes gave the attendees insight on how they became giants in their individual industries. It was truly inspiring to hear stories of struggle that lead to triumph. Tsega Gebreves is the a founding partner of NAOF, which is a US Private Equity Fund; this fund assists with making investments in Africa by US companies. She is currently working with Satya Capital; Satya invests across the African continent primarily in the financial services, FMCG, energy, and natural resources. The first key note speaker was no other than “Mr. IT” himself, Chief Leo Stan Ekeh. When one thinks IT in West Africa Chief Stan’s name comes to mind, as he pioneered this sector. He is currently the Chairman and CEO of Zinox Technology which is certified by both Microsoft and Intel. His company is supplying the majority of the voting machines that will be used in the 2011 Nigeria Presidential Elections. Jaguda.com got a chance to sit down with Chief Ekeh and was truly amazed by his story.
Thierry Tanoh received the African Business Club Excellence Award for his work with the IFC. He became the first African vice president of the international Finance Corporation. Mr. Tanoh is the vice President for Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Western Europe at the International Finance Corporation.
The panels covered an array of topics. Some of the popular panels were;: Venture Capital and Entrepreneurship; Africa and China: The next stage of engagement; Healthcare in Africa: the need and success stories; Business and Politics; and Nigerian Case Study: From extractive industry to diversification. The panelists were subject matter experts in their different fields and they knew what was happening on the ground in Africa.
After the conference wrapped up there was a networking event that featured several companies from all over the globe. Most of these firms were looking to hire from the field of professionals that were present. Afterwards, the award banquet took place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. This was a private event that drew attendees from the conference as well as other guests. It featured a presentation by Diageo (Platinum Sponsor) and Voices from a Different Generations. Afterwards, there was an after party that took place which featured celebrity DJ from Nigeria “DJ Obi” who rocked the night away.
