Pryse

DPP07DD040E0jE0944__

Born Princess Esindu, she is popularly known as the first lady of chocolate city. Her name is Pryse. She hails from Enugu State but born and brought up in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. She is the youngest of four and the only girl in the family. She is a graduate of Media Communications from Nottingham Trent University UK.

Adaoha of Jaguda.com catches up with the first lady, for a little one on one chat.

When did you start rapping?

Pryse: I started rapping and writing rhythms at 10. It was mostly gospel rhythms but then it blossomed into what it is today.

How did it blossom?

Pryse: I used to follow my big brother around, he is a producer. So whenever he plays a beat, I will say “yea I can rap on that”. He had a lot of impact in what I have become today. I also belonged to a rap group then, we called ourselves All Out Squad and I was known as baby pryse.

Oh really, did the group get gigs?

Pryse: Yes, we were quite popular then and performed at different shows. My parents tried to make sure that we don’t move away from our studies, get distracted you know.

Pryse
Pryse

You have a new video for your single, Eleto, which by the way a lot of people really like. What does Eleto mean?

Pryse: Eleto means you are not strong enough to stop me from achieving my goal. Nothing can stop me.

Tell me how you got signed to Chocolate City?

Pryse: I was living in the UK then, I followed MI on twitter. I think he read my bio, and I had “dopest female rapper”. He sent me a message giving me his email, saying I should send my work to him. It was at that period when Oleku was hot and people were remixing the song. So I sent my own version of Oleku and links for my other works. I guess he goggled them and sent me a mail, asking what it takes to get me to chocolate city. Here I was very excited to be getting the attention and he was asking what it takes. I was still in school, so we just kept in touch till I was done and ready to move back.

You were definitely very lucky.

Pryse: Yes I was

Did you perform at shows while living in the UK?

Pryse: I did, the biggest event for me then was opening for Modenine in 2010 in London. That was a pretty big deal for me.

How do you feel when compared to female rappers in Nigeria, which by the way is increasing?

Pryse: I wouldn’t compare myself with them, they are all doing well. I prefer to be compared with the greatest because that’s what I hope to be in the future.

A lot of rappers now have gone a bit commercial with their music, what’s your angle, strictly rap music or hip hop?

Pryse: My style is definitely hip hop

.
.

You saw “The List”, it’s generated so much response both from the rappers and even listeners. How do you feel about hip hop in Nigeria right now?

Pryse: Hip hop in Nigeria is getting very serious now; it’s growing. It’s going to keep growing.

With the exception of the choc boys, which other rappers would you like to collaborate with?

Pryse: Phyno and Olamide

On Fashion: Are you a trend follower or setter?

Pryse: I don’t follow trends. I will say my look is edgy and classy. I love bright colors and love to stand out. Here I am wearing a bright red dress. I just love brightness.

What is your casual day outfit?

Pryse: Denim shirt and leggings, heels but not every day.

On your twitter handle, I saw “feminist” on your bio, let’s talk about this.

Pryse: I am not a man hater or anything like that; I just believe women can be strong minded. Your man doesn’t define you. I admire strong women doing their thing.

Who inspires you as a woman, when you look at her and say yes, all round role model?

Pryse: Genevieve Nnaji inspires me. She is single and classy. She is good at what she does and also a very big inspiration to a lot of women out there.

If you were not rapping, which other career part would appeal to you?

Pryse: If I wasn’t rapping then I will work in TV, but behind the scenes as a producer.

1175122_654102574614117_1697361962_n

What’s next for Pryse?

Pryse: The video for Eleto just dropped. I have a new single to be out soon. Taking that one home, the single is called Naija Delta Money

Do you have any message for the fans?

Pryse: Yes, I want them to know that a lot is yet to be offered. We haven’t scratched the surface yet.

We wish you best of luck in everything you do.

Thank you so much

It’s not new at all. As a matter of fact this clip is close to 2 years old but hey, it’s #throwbackthursday and we’re allowed to go ahead with it. Check her freestyle on Nikki Minaj’s Moment For Life.

If you didn’t know, now you know. Pryse is pretty nice on the mic. But you already knew that.

Happy Sunday people and to all our football fans, Happy Start to the EPL Season (unless of course you’re an arsenal fan). We resume our weekly review, Two To Review.

This week we hop on two tracks from the hottest name in entertainment, Dbanj and a rising star in the making, Pryse. Let’s get into it.

Dbanj – Raise You Glasses

Dbanj has everything to make a serious quality track, and in some cases it works perfectly, others not so much. This new track, Raise Your Glasses by Dbanj for Hennessy Artistry 2013 comes off as average. It’s not abysmal, but it’s certainly not memorable. You’ll listen to it, enjoy it, and go to the next track.

The beat by De-Vee is solid, and the overall tune is decent but the lyrics unfortunately are pretty weak. It almost makes the song lack direction and leaves us with no signature Dbanj lyric to take home.

I never shy away from speaking the truth and this is certainly not Dbanj’s best work by any standards. It works for the occasion but outside that, it wont go down in memory as Dbanj’s memorable songs.

Rating: 5.5/10

Pryse – Kolo Remix ft. Burna Boy

New joint from the punchline queen, Pryse and overall it does well to improve her brand as one of the nicest femcees in these parts of Africa. Even though it’s a remix to an old track, it refreshes and almost comes off as new and serious upgrade from the original.

With MI on the beat, and Burna boy as a feature it’s hard to see how this will go wrong. Even though it’s a remix it would’ve been nice to see Pryse switch up the lyrics of her verses seeing as she’s improved quite a bit since 2010 (when the original was released), but nonetheless it’s decent enough. Burna boy steals the show though with his verse, and does what he does best.

Overall the track is an enjoyable one, and one that can make the ipod playlist.

So last week I reviewed D’banj’s Blame It On The Money and needless to say I was crucified for ‘being a hater’, but truth is that song was nothing to write home about, and I stand by my review and rating. But alas, we’re back again another sunday, and we are reviewing yet another song from D’banj :). Hopefully I don’t get crucified for this one too, and if I do who cares? I’m just an ordinary blogger anyways.

We’ll also be touching Beazy’s joint, I’m In The Mood.

D’banj – Finally

Now this is a jam we can all be proud of. D’banj ‘bounces’ black heavily with this track that is sure to become a serious hit all over the place. It’s a familiar formula for hit tracks – Get a catchy hook, keep the lyrics simple, and throw in some dance instructions. Alas, you have a track that everyone from age 3 to 103 can dance to.

The beat is great, the lyrics are good enough, the hook is infectious, and the dance? Well you’ll soon see mine. Nice one from Eja Nla! All is not lost in that creative juice box.

If there’s anything that I don’t like about the track is….. Nothing. Nothing to say that I don’t like. *No I wasn’t threatened* LOL. The song is really good. It’s not the best song in the world, but overall you can’t say he missed the spot anywhere.

Rating – 8.5/10

Beazy – I’m In The Mood

Beazy is one of the most respected names in Nigerian music, and his work ethic is unrivaled. In week 7 of his second go round of Beazy Music Monday, he drops this joint Chocolate City queen, Pryse. On first listen it’s a solid track.

The beat drops and you know it’s about to something enjoyable. The beat literally puts you in the mood, and Beazy gets on and continues the vibe. Pryse does her thing as she always does, and overall you get a track that is so “11pm on the way to the club.”

If anything is wrong with the track, it’s that it doesn’t hit that climax spot that you’d want sometimes and can get a bit monotonous after a few listens. I guess it’s more intended as a chill track. Also the verses are not the best we’ve heard from both of em, but still solid.

Rating – 7/10

That’s all folks. We’re done this week, and hopefully no one will call me a hater, or “anyone can own a blog and write rubbish” blogger. LOL. Peace.

Intro & Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

NAYOSOUL

NayoSoul came into our radar last year with her highly infectious and soulful song, Destiny Train. If I hadn’t looked at the bio, I would’ve thought I was listening to a seasoned and experienced soul artist from a different era. A combination of her uniquely high but somewhat raspy voice, and well written lyics made that song easily one of my bests last year.

NayoSoul as the name implies is a soul singer in every sense of the word. With that said, she might not be full-blown naija gbedu material but please believe her fans will forever appreciate her music and she has the ability to go global since her genre of music reaches beyond the shores of Africa.

.

PHENOM

KnightHouse has an eye for talent, and you just have to feel like they landed a big fish in Phenom. In many ways he reminds me of MI in that you can tell he is a musician first before an MC – you know those that listen to the music, and not just spit bars up and down.

The first time I personally heard him on track was on DJ Neptune’s Hard, and I was left heavily impressed. From that instant it seemed like everything else I heard from him got better and better. Omo Naija, his Jimmy’s Jump Off freestyle, Today, What’s Your Fujji Remix, MI’s 6ft 7ft and most recently his tune Shuku Shuk Bam Bam with label mate, Iye. All have left me thinking that this guy right here is already a star – some people just don’t know it yet.

.

PHYNO

Representing the Eastern side of Naija, we have Phyno! When you think of artists from the east, there’s a certain sound you expect to hear. Now take that sound, and blend it with traditional hip-hop, and this is what Phyno brings to the table. He reminds me a lot of Ill Bliss, but maybe a more commercial version (no pun intended). As a producer he’s very well respected in the game also as he’s done a lot of stuff for big name artists.

His tune Multiply Remix (ft. MI, Timaya, Mr Raw & Flavour) is what brought him to our attention, and then came What R U W18 4 & Shut down, and then the fans really started paying attention. Phyno is a special talent, and with all the right packaging he might really form a new movement for rappers for the east. I mean, look what he did with the hook on Ill Bliss’ Anam Achi Kwanu. Heavy!

.

POE

Poe in my opinion is one of the few purist in Nigerian hip-hop. Undiluted hip-hop flows through his veins. What do you expect when he rolls with peeps from SDC? You are the company you keep, and Poe is every bit just as nice. In some ways he reminds me of Kahli Abdu.

His tunes, Get Me Home & Poe’s Love have been in heavy rotation when I’m in my hip-hop mode, and his verse on Kahli’s Stuck With You silently turned out to be the best (No disrespect to Kahli & X.O).

His mixtape Icarus should be released soon, and I’m sure at that time we’ll really know what he’s about. Till then we’ll patiently wait and hold ourselves with the material he has out.

.

PRYSE

It’s Pryse! Pryse doesn’t have an album or a mixtape out and she’s already considered as one of the top 5 femcees in Nigeria. You gotta know you’re hot, when arguably the hottest rapper in Nigeria, MI says so. Lyrics, word play, and toughness on the mic makes Pryse the great mc she is.

Pryse had been on her grind way before the ch0c-city deal came through with tunes, Diva, Remember The Name, PH, LAG, ABJ, N’Otis with MI, 5mics’ Across The Ocean, but probably her most popular was Femcee Toh Bad, and that had peeps going, whooaa!!! Who be dat?

Now with Chocolate City behind her it’s hard to see this girl going wrong. The team is solid, and she already had the talent. So you know it’s game on from here on out.

To be continued
