The excitement and drama of MTN’s Project Fame has begun!! Last Sunday on the project fame stage in Lagos, 16 young west Africans sang to please not just the audience but the strict Project fame judges.

Several of them got the crowd on their feet cheering and applauding, they were outstanding even on the first nominations show.
Five out of the 16 even though they gave mostly decent performances, were considered below par and could face elimination from the PF Academy after only two weeks. None of them wants to go home, and definitely not now. With N5million plus an SUV, N3m and a saloon car, another N2m plus a car and N2m to be won they all will be fighting hard to stay in the competition.

The drama has just begun on MTN’s project Fame with these first set of probation candidates now begging for viewers votes to keep them save from elimination. It is still early yet, so most of them may not have many fans who have followed them enough to vote for them, but by Friday when voting is concluded, one of them will be saved by viewer or friends votes. The others will be at the mercy of either the faculty and the other contestants in the academy to save them. At the end of the day, two of them will pack their bags and go home.

The five who didn’t make it this week and two of them will not make it back into the Academy are;

Ayoka(Voting # 1), Oluchi(Voting # 15), Simon (Voting # 17), Rowland(Voting # 16) and Leonard(Voting # 11). And Leonard is the only contestant from Sierra Leone this season, if he goes their hopes are gone.

They all looked great and dressed like stars but if they are not lucky to be saved they are going home.
Who will it be? Viewers decide by sending their voting numbers to MTN short code 306.
The drama and suspense have just begun on MTN PF 6.0 as this weekend contestants will go home and another set will be placed on probation. Don’t miss all the action daily on STV, ONTV, Soundcity,MiTV and NTA in Nigeria.

Iyanya With His Headies Award
Iyanya With His Headies Award
Iyanya With His Headies Award

As an avid watcher of music reality shows in Nigeria it is interesting to note that several have come and gone and most leave very little to show for it. The one seeming exception is MTN’s Project Fame West Africa which has completed five reasonable seasons to date. The only other music discovery reality show that comes close is Idols Nigeria now just finishing season 3. Several others didn’t get past season 2 and some crashed out after the first season.

The consistency of Project Fame is commendable in many ways, not only has Project Fame consistently produced winners but it also seems to have the magic formula for producing a string of winners who are all doing well in the music industry and winning awards post Project Fame. Notable among them is Iyanya Mbuk the winner of season 1 and whose hit single Kukere with the famous Etighi dance has seen him touring the USA and UK and also winning the 2013 Headies as the Best Pop single of the year. He is not the only successful award winner that MTN’s Project Fame has produced as the season 2 and 3 winners have both also won both local and international awards. iMyke the season 2 winner of PF won the Soundcity Music Video award for Fine Fine Lady in 2010, a video shot as part of his winners contract and in Dec 2012 Chidinma (nick named small but mighty) stole the show by winning the KORA award for best female Act (West Africa) with her song Kedike.

The Project Fame Academy has also produced star acts such as Nii & Kesse from Ghana. Kesse won the 2012 Ghana Music Award for Best Male Vocalist and was nominated in four categories at the 2013 edition.
Going by the trends so far Project Fame has shown enduring consistency in transforming young raw talent with heart into stars who can stand their ground among the best around.

So let us see if they can do it again in season 6 which starts with auditions in Liberia on may 25th in Monrovia. Followed by Sierra Leone on May 30th and June 1st in Freetown and Accra ,Ghana on June 1st. the Nigerian auditions will hold in Benin & Abuja on June 8th, Port Harcourt & Ilorin on June 15th, Calabar and Ibadan on June 22nd and Lagos on June 28 & 29th 2013.

As final 6 thrill with Club bangers…

There was a lot of activity in the MTN Project Fame West Africa competition last week as the final six contestants kept everyone wanting more after every show.

The competition and anxiety in the academy has heightened. There would be no more elimination in the competition until the grand finale and the competition has become more tense and demanding. The contestants who are now on their own are doing all they can to deliver outstanding performances so as to court favor from the general viewing public.

On Saturday, December 10, 2011, the final six performed back-to-back African club bangers from prominent artistes like award-winning duo, P square, 2face, Duncan Mighty, 9ice among others. The judges admitted that there was an enormous improvement in the contestants, from when they began the competition. “I have to commend the Project Fame Academy Faculty for the hard work and dedication they have put in training the contestants to become what they are today… I must say that one can only get this kind of experience and drilling from a platform like this. MTN Project Fame West Africa has given you guys the opportunity of a lifetime and the training you have received would definitely guide you through your music careers.” Nomoreloss commended.

On-air personality for Classic FM, Bucky who was the guest judge for the night also appreciated the contestants. “I am really glad to be
here tonight to witness these performances. You all have wonderful voices and I wish you the very best in the competition.”

On Sunday, December 11, 2011, the final six brought a Christmas cheer to everyone as they performed different Christmas carols and were backed up by the PlayHouse Voices. Both the Judges and Faculty were very pleased as they quietly allowed the contestants take them through the beauty of the yuletide season.

“You all just ushered in Christmas for some of us who haven’t started feeling its presence” gushed Academy voice coach, Ige. “Your
performances brought in the reason for the season and I personally thank you for that”.

The contestants later performed their individual composed songs and every performance got a standing ovation. “You can only get the best of the best from the PFWA stage. The Judges have done an excellent job picking six very intelligent and motivated individuals who would leave this competition and take over the music industry with their outstanding talents. Weldone guys!” Ben said happily.

The contestants closed the show with a group performance along with the PlayHouse Voices singing K’naan’s “Waving Flag” and Shakira’s “Waka Waka”.

The decision to choose the best contestant in PFWA season 4 still lies in your hands. To vote for either Ethel, Ese, Monica, Ruth, Roy or
Yvonne, text the contestants unique number to 306 from an MTN number. Each text costs N50 and voting ends 6pm on Saturday so start voting now!

SWV

There was a pleasant surprise at the PFWA academy as SWV also known as “Sisters With Voices”, American female R&B trio from New York and American old time Musical band, Midnight Star stopped by the Project Fame Academy to see the final contestants while they were rehearsing at Ultima Studios, Lekki, Lagos.

Sisters with Voices, better known as SWV which includes Cheryl GambleTamara Johnson and Leanne Lyons (the group’s founder) came together in 1990 as a gospel group, SWV were one of the most successful R&B groups of the 1990s. They had a series of hits, including “Weak“, “Right Here/Human Nature“, “I’m So Into You“, and You’re the One”.

Midnight Star, the R&B band was formed in 1976 at Kentucky State University by trumpeter Reggie Calloway, vocalist Belinda Lipscomb, guitarist/vocalist Melvin Gentry, bassist Kenneth Gant, multi-instrumentalist Bill Simmons, keyboard player/vocalist Bo Watson and guitarist/keyboardist Jeff Cooper, as a self-contained group. They achieved their biggest success in the UK with “Midas Touch” and “Headlines” in 1986 among other hits in the 80’s.

SWV and Midnight Star had a nice time meeting the contestants and watching them rehearse. Uncle Ben also took to the stage and performed “Midas Touch” by Midnight Star among other African Songs to thrill the special guests.

They were obviously very impressed with the reception they got as they took turns to encourage the contestants, advising them to put in their best in their forthcoming performances and also in their music careers in the nearest future.

It’s been several weeks of hard work, grooming, performances and now we finally have a winner. Chidinma made history as she was announced as the winner of Project Fame West African Season 3. She is the first lady to win Project Fame.

The last six contestants – Kesse, Ochuko, Eyo, Tolu, Yetunde and Chidinma lined up after their performances for the night, waiting for the winner to be announced. Benjamin and Adora took their time to pronounce the winner, raising anxiety among the contestants.

It’s the first time a lady is winning the contest. And Chidinma’s win makes it the third time in a row a Nigerian is coming on top.

Gifted Ghanaian singer Kesse Frimpong was named 1st runner up winning- N1.5m and a Toyota Corolla while Eyo Eminue made the 2nd runner up position and went home with N1m and a Toyota Yaris.

Fan-favourite Yetunde (a.k.a. Omo Ibadan) was named third runner-up.

The other two contestants, Tolu Adeshina and Ochuko Ogbu-Sifo didn’t completely lose out of the competition as the top six contestants are expected to release a group song, produced by one of Nigeria’s leading producers; a well as a video.

Mike Anyasodo emerged the second winner of season 2 in 2009. With his debut album in the pipeline, he has released several singles including the recent ‘Fine Fine Lady’ which is receiving massive airplay on TV and Radio stations in the country.

Congratulations to Chidinma, and we wish her the best in the future.
