We bring to you Phenom’s new single ‘Gyration’.
We bring to you Phenom’s new single ‘Gyration’.
2014 has been an interesting year in Nigeria Music. Every year, we have new-comers, new game changers, someone with a different sound.
Let’s look at the Top List of freshers mixtapes we downloaded, talked about, and enjoyed this year. We usually do not pay attention to new-comers mix-tapes, but if you don’t I think you have been missing out on good music. This year showed how nigerian music listeners pay attention to music depth, content and body of Work.
1. Mojeed | Westernized West African – The super talented rapper and Aristokrat record artiste who was introduced to the scene a year ago with “Bosibi (Come Here), has been relentless in his pursuit of taking over the hip-hop scene. He dropped couple of singles like, No time, Elevator, Well Well then….. Westernized African the Mixtape.
When You Listen To Mojeed, you get this different feeling… Like when M.I dropped Illegal Music five years ago.
Mojeed tried not to bore his listeners with his ability to sample Fela differently from what other rappers have done in recent times, very creative. You would think this is a legit album.
Great Body of work mojeed, salute.
2. Tay | The Passport – Austin Tay, popularly known as “Tay” might be the youngest “talented” Nigerian artiste I have ever listened to . His mixtape puts a smile on my face, his sound is unique. It’s something you haven’t heard before from a Nigerian.
Tay makes matured music, his ability to produce all his songs makes him an all-round artiste. He’s currently working on his next mixtape.
Watch out for that in 2015…
3. Kamar |The Audition – Simon Tachio, popularly known as Kamar, yet another aristokrat artiste who was introduced this year made his mark releasing one of the best fresher mixtapes of 2014. The super-talented kaduna born and bred artiste and MTN project fame alumni is said to be one of the biggest artiste from the North.
His debut, “It’s friday”, a song which channeled both old-school Do Wop mixed with classical Nigerian R& B celebrating the weekend got good reviews from critical listeners.
Kamar uses his unique style of music to create a flavorful body of work. You don’t have to be Hausa to enjoy his music. Kamar’s music draws you into a rarely sub-genre of nigerian music.
4. Omari | Rap is Deep, Poetry is Deeper – Heard Omari for the first time nine months ago, releasing his debut mixtape “Rap is deep, poetry is deeper”
Real name, Abiodun Teslim Alabi, he has been around for quite some time. He released a couple of singles like ‘Bow Down’ and ‘Zion’s Daughter’ which got massive air-play on the radio. His mixtape depicts his love, passion for this genre, hip-hop. Rap is deep, poetry is deeper shows Omari is standing his ground, and he is here to stay; good poet.
We hope to get more from Omari next year, consistency is key i believe.
5. Sute | Jeli – He was featured on Tay’s Mixtape, “Bounce” and “Gabriel” one of my favorites on the mixtape.
Being part of Bantu collection, Sute dropped his debut “Badagry” an ode to the popular area in Lagos. Sute narrated how beautiful badagry is, my favorite song from him.
His second tune, Enwonwu”, gives us an insight on his type of music. He narrates his personal tale of growth through exposure and experience. An ode for something he loves.
One thing you should know about Sute, he is good story teller. His mixtape projects a short peek into his life and his musical experience.
He’s also a producer (a good one at it), you should keep tabs on Sute and the whole Bantu collection.
6. Ozone | Superiority Complex – Five months ago, the aristokrat rapper Ozone was introduced to the scene with his debut ” All Night”. He was crowned as the winner of Beat 99.9fm’s night of a Living DJs battle back in 2012.
His 15-track Superiority Complex mixtape depicts ozone’s penchant for his intricate word play; great features from Wizkid, BOJ, Yung L, Mojeed. Superiority complex is a complete body of work. Waddup Ozone
7. Chyn | The Graduate – After a Long Hiatus from the scene, Cheyenne Labesa Popularly known as “Chyn” returned early last year with “Aiye Oloba” off his Mixtape, the graduate. The Avante-garde rapper who gave us singles like “N.A.H(No Autographs or Hugs) and the gripping visuals for his song Dita Von Teese returned with a bang.
Aiye Oloba, the first single off his mixtape explains how the king of Afro-Rap (Chyn), as he claims returned,”Breath of fresh air”.
The Graduate depicts new age of hip-hop in Nigeria. i love his energetic flow, his ability not to bore his listeners, great.
8. Pucado | Pukie The Great – A year ago, the Imposter - pucado was introduced to the scene, with his un-orthodox flow he captured so many fans. However, Pukie the great (the Ep) is a unique brand of indigenous rap. He released couple of singles off the Ep before its release; songs like “Ukwu Nka” featuring Phyno, Imposter featuring label-mate, kamar.
With the release of this EP, pucado already carved a niche for himself in the nigeruian hiphop scene, Every-one wants to sound like “M.I, Iceprince, Yung6ix” and the likes; no one wants to create their own sound. I think that’s what pucado did, and he does it well.
Another Mixtape before the album should it….. Like Illbliss said..”Pucado Your confidence is Presidential”
9. KidaKudz | 1995 - – So far, Kida has portrayed the definition of an hustler. Last year, he dropped his first EP, “Pharaoh of the New School” one of the best mix-tapes of 2013. This year has been really busy for kida, he kept churning out music contents accompanied with good videos.
1995 the EP, commemorates with the year of his birth; a good body of work with good features from Ice prince, Reminisce, and Boj. I feel like the mixtape should have been longer, but anyways the five track Ep is dope.
10. Phenom | The B.R.A Ep – Topa Onimowo popularly known as Phenom, who is due for a debut album by now released his B.R.A EP few months ago. The Knight house rapper is currently putting finishing touches to his acclaimed “Star-studded” album. With production and features from Sammy, Dammy krane, Iceprince, Capital Femi, Olamide, DJ Klem , Maleek berry and Legendury Beatz. We should be expecting it in 2015 (hopefully)
His music year started with a remix of his previous single from 2013, Murder dem. The track featured Super-star wizkid. The remix got good reviews better than the original version. Phenom rarely disappoints, but his EP didn’t cut it at all.
B.R.A has no lyrical content, and lacks depth. Knowing Phenom being a very good Em’cee; I think he rushed this EP. I know his fans have been clamoring for an album release and B.R.A made a lot of folks cynical about it.
Waddup Phenom, you can do better…….
It’s a new era, a proof that the under-dogs are truly the fame changers. Let’s get that competition started. This is a new era so get familiar.
I’m a Fan.
See you Next Year.

After crossing over from Owerri to Lagos, ‘Gabriel Chukwuemeka Wisdom’ popularly known as ‘Gslim’ is definately off to a good start to his music scene take-over with his new refreshing single titled ‘STRONGER’.
The talented singer/songwriter has proved that good music still exists and this is quite evident with his delivery of English and Igbo language on this feel good track with the Knight House general PHENOM, produced by PARANORMAL BEATZ.
MIGMIE Music is proud to present to you ‘STRONGER’ and many more brilliant music from Gslim. There is definitely a bright future ahead of this young and talented musician.

As with the past couple of years(2012, 2013) we’re going to delve into giving you the albums and projects from artists that are the most anticipated going into 2014 or rather those you should look forward to.
2013 gave us a nice collection of albums, some expected, some unexpected, some lived up to expectations, and others not so much. 2014 is no different, but we’ll attempt to bring this to you based on what we know going into the new year.
Chidinma – TBA
We have gotten confirmation from her label execs that yes there will be an album from Ms Kedike in 2014, and you have to say hers is probably one of the most anticipated for any female artist in Nigeria. She’s had a couple of very solid singles over the past year including Oh Baby, Kite, Jollie, and Bless My Hustle which features Phyno. With the buzz she has going, one has to say a lot of us are definitely looking forward to her album.
Dammy Krane – TBA
From all accounts we were supposed to get an album from Dammy Krane in 2013 but somehow that didn’t work out. However he did drop one of the hotter jams of 2013 in Xteristics, and in addition to that released Lobatan & Gratitude. You gotta feel that if he doesn’t drop something this year we just might get tired of anticipating… unless of course he drops another hot jam.
Endia & Yung L – TBA
I have both of them because we might get a joint GRIP Musik project or solo projects from one or both of them this year. Nothing has been set in stone as far as I know, but I get the feeling we’ll get to enjoy a very solid project from the GRIP Musik camp this year. MA2G maybe? It’s only almost 4 years late. Chopstix has been blazing beats all of 2013, Endia’s name has been buzzing since his single 48 and Yung L’s Red Rose is still on fire. It’s about that time yea?
MI Abaga – The Chairman
From all accounts MI Abaga had a relatively quiet 2013, with Ice Prince taking center stage in Chocolate City, but that doesn’t mean he’s fading. You know MI will always do something exceptional when it counts. Even though his last single Chairman didn’t really move the meter as some had expected it to do, you have to put it there that you shouldn’t underestimate MI and his 3rd album that is slated to be released this year, The Chairman, is still one to look forward to.
Phenom – Best Rapper Alive (B.R.A) [Mixtape]
Phenom’s B.R.A was supposed to be released late 2013, and actually as of december it was still expected at the tail end of the year. As we all know that didn’t happen so you know it’s definitely going to happen this year. Phenom, the KnightHouse general has been one of the promising acts to look out for since he burst into the scene. This is the year his project drops and it’s one that could potentially define the way his career will carry on from there.
Phyno – TBA
If I had to guess I’d say he’d title it Man Of The Year, but his camp has refused to confirm any album titles yet. But really it doesn’t matter what the album is called, you get the feeling it’s gonna be packing some major heat. His singles Man Of Year and Parcel have put him on the hottest act to watch list in 2014, so it’s natural that his project will be highly anticipated.
Praiz – Rich & Famous
Finally! This will be the year we get an album from Praiz. I know we said that last year but this (as with last year) we are getting confirmation from his camp, and we’ve been told to be on the look out for a few surprises. Praiz arguably has the best singing voice in Nigeria. Even tho his last single Oshe which featured Awilo didn’t really thrill his core fans, you have to still put it out there that there’ll be a lot of folks waiting for his project. Including me
Ruby (Self Titled)
Ruby has the potential to surprise a lot of people this year, and with word that she’ll be putting out a self-titled EP, 2014 could be the break out year for the songstress. Her previous singles, Okay and Down have been doing pretty well and have gathered her a substantial fan base. For the talents Ruby possesses and the solid team we know she has behind her, expect this EP to be very solid. Even if it’s not mainstream afro-pop.
Sean Tizzle – The Journey
Sean Tizzle had an outstanding 2013, and it ended with him grabbing the Next Rated award at the Headies Awards 2013. His singles Sho Lee, Mama Eh and International Badman have been in steady rotation for pretty much all of 2013, and you have to figure that his album The Journey, will be one to look out for this year. If we are to go with history this could make him a bonafide star.
Skales – TBA
So Skales just might be losing his buzz a little bit as we’ve seen single after single after single come and go, but still no album. Once again word on the street is that we’ll get to see an album this year, but just like 2012, and 2013, expecting to drop an album and actually dropping an album are 2 different things. With WizKid also dropping an album this year, it could go bad for Skales once again this year. However if this album does drop this year, it’ll be a long time coming and one that will definitely be one to listen to.
Wande Coal – Black Diamond
Wande Coal is finally out of the shadows of Mo-Hits and Mavin Records and now floats his own label, Black Diamond. His recent singles The Kick, Baby Face and Amorawa have been doing pretty well, even though he hasn’t quite hit his Mushin To Mo-hits form, but everyone knows the talent is there. As much as this album will be anticipated, everyone will be curious to see how it all comes out without one of his major mentors in music, Don Jazzy.
WizKid – TBA
Star Boy! He just might be the artist of 2013 in terms of his impact to music, and many fans were extremely disappointed when his album scheduled for June, 2013 was postponed till this year. His singles Jaiye Jaiye, Drop and On Top Your Matter are arguably some of the hottest singles of 2013, and everyone knows WizKid rarely falls hand, so you know his 2nd album due out this year will be one that every music fan will want. Plus we might see even more international collaborations.
Yemi Alade – Miss Johnny or King Yemi Alade
Yemi Alade has the potential to be the top female entertainer by time 2014 is over and done with, and that is for real. Now we just have to wait and see if that potential actualizes, but you have to say so far so good. Her single Johnny has been a serious buzz since its release. Word from the label is that the album is definitely dropping this year. Titles are rumored to be Miss Johnny or King Yemi Alade, but no one has confirmed. Well even if the name is Moi-Moi music it’ll still be one I’ll definitely look forward to and so should you.
Yung6ix – 6’O Clock
This the year for Yung6ix. Just like Skales, you can only buzz very well for so long without dropping a major project before fans start to lose interest. A lot of his issues have been chucked up to the label, but you get the feeling that’s all about to end. His album is said to feature the likes of M.I, Olamide, Erigga and Yemi Alade amongst others, so you know it’s going to be a heavy dose of hip-hop with a south-south flavor. Definitely one to look out for this year.
IllBliss – TBA
JayWon – Product of an Environment
Seyi Shay (Not 100% sure an album will drop this year)
Harrysong aka Mr Songz
