The best of Nigerian society came out to watch what some are calling the theatre production of the year, “The Wives‘. The command performance which held on Saturday, 11 October at the Agip Recital Hall of Muson Centre, Onikan Lagos wrapped up a 3-day festival of brilliant stagecraft.

Guests at the performance included Minister for Communication Technology Omobola Johnson, Chief Executive of Standard Chartered Bank Bola Adesola, Chief Executive of WIMBIMZ, Osayi Alile, Rita Dominic, Olu Jacobs, Patrick Doyle, Tunde Kelani, Aduke Gomez, Wana Udobang, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Noble Igwe, football legend Emmanuel Babayaro, Osas Ighodaro, Shade Ladipo, Subomi Plumptre, Mo Cheddah, amongst others.

The play, written by Professor Ahmed Yerima was brought to life by iconic actors including Joke Silva, Jide Kosoko, Iretiola Doyle, Kate Henshaw and Lala Akindoju, there were guest appearances by Toyin Oshinaike, and Media Entrepreneur, Adebola Williams who makes a return to the stage after 14 years.

It literally takes the soul to pull of a stage play in this day and time,” said Lala Akindoju, producer of the play. “But those who are passionate about keeping the soul of the culture alive understand why it is important to anchor major productions like ‘The Wives’. The turnout – a full house everyday – makes it all totally worth it. I thank MTN and all other partners for, forgive the pun, making this happen.”

The audience also enjoyed a command performance by multi-talented singer, songwriter and music producer Cobhams Asuquo. The show was anchored by award winning actor, OC Ukeje. The first two days has also enjoyed brilliant musical performances from Femi Leye and Aramide.

Everyone is incredibly proud of Lala for what she has achieved here with ‘The Wives'; it continues a trend that this incredible young woman has made a habit, pushing trends with big passion projects including the V Monologues and Open Mic Theatre,” said Adebola Williams who played the lawyer around whom the play’s twist was built. “On a personal level, it was gratifying to come back to the stage after 14 long years and to join an excellent cast of Nigeria’s best. Acting has always been my first love – and I was glad to see each performance get a resounding applause and the finale, a standing ovation.”

Yesterday, some Nollywood stars including Omotola were honoured by the Federal Government. Charles Novia took to his Facebook page to congratulate them and also air his thoughts on Genevieve as an actress, read below.

“Congratulations to the Nollywood recipients of the Nigerian National Awards which took place today in Abuja. Kenneth Nnebue, Joke Silva and Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde were each given National Honours by President Jonathan today.

Kenneth Nnebue is generally acknowledged as the founder of the home video industry in Nigeria which later snowballed into Nollywood. His epoch – making movie ‘Living in Bondage’ which he Executive Produced in 1992 generated the unleashing of creative spirits in Nigeria who followed his footsteps and used the affordable home video technology to exhibit their gifts.

Perhaps without Nnebue’s foray into that sector, the likes of me and thousands of others would never have found the creative leeway we used to show our talents. His award is belated though. But better late than never.

Joke Silva is an actor’s actor. A formidable screen personality and one of the most articulate thespians Nigeria has produced. She is an inspiration to millions and her award is just about a crowning glory she could ever receive from her nation. A priceless gem.

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde is known to many. Her acting prowess is arguably in a class by itself and her being nominated as one of the world’s 100 most influential persons by TIME magazine a couple of years back must have paved the way for her present national recognition by the Federal Government. Frankly speaking, I personally think she has more depth in acting than her ‘rival’ Genevieve Nnaji. I have worked with both of them in the past and also studied their acting styles. Omotola has the gift of role immersion. She gives everything into her characters. There is an organic style of interpretation she is gifted with. Very few actors have that. She Is not a Method Actor, mind you but she has delivered roles which many method actors would give her a standing ovation for.

Genevieve, on the other hand, is a fantastic actress and a trend – setting one too. But she lacks the intrinsic ability to evolve artistically beyond her present heights in her career. That is my opinion. There is an underlying stereotype in her interpretation of her roles in many of her movies; a linear aloofness and veiled disdain at the thought of being pushed further down the exploratory lane. Of course she has an uncanny screen presence which generally veils her artistic shortcomings when it comes to acting and between her and her rivals, she comes tops on the fan base list. However, with an attitude which seems to say she has nothing more to prove, even the fans would become restless if new artistic exploits are not offered from her to which they can beat their chests.

And for fans of both actresses, this is a professional review of their acting abilities and not an attempt to rekindle old rivalries. Somehow, this post on the National Honours dove tailed into their artistry. All well and good.

Congrats to the Recipients once again.

I’m no expert but personally, I think both women are exceptional actresses hence their recognition by the Federal Government. But being a biased Genevieve Nnaji fan…I don’t agree with Charles Novi, Genevieve is a better actress. What do you think? Who is a better?

NollywoodonCable Films

If you live in America and a lover of Nollywood, and cant seem to get hold of the films, well brace yourself because you are in for a surprise.

TIME WARNER, COX CABLE, PARTNERS AND AFFILLIATES WILL PREMIERE FOR THE FIRST TIME ON CABLE TV, 10 TOP-QUALITY NOLLYWOOD MOVIES ON FEBRUARY 1, 2013

TO OVER 40 MILLION NORTH AMERICAN HOMES.

A welcomed innovation in the entertainment industry is here, as Nollywood movies will now be available on major cable television networks in the U.S. courtesy of Brandcast Media, Inc. Nollywood, the leader in the African movie industry, is currently the third-largest producer of feature films in the world, ranking only behind Hollywood in the United States and India’s Bollywood as number two. Viewers of Time Warner, Cox, partners and affiliate cable television networks will now be able to watch Nollywood movies On-Demand starting February 1st, 2013. This will be a boon to millions of cable subscribers of various cultural orientations in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean.

With the addition of Nollywood movies to Cable TV content, Brandcast Media, Inc. aims to generate crossover appeal through the exposure of this unique content to over 40 million North American homes. The movies are carefully selected high quality titles that will end the usual buyer’s remorse viewers experience with some Nollywood movies they purchase without preview. There will be no endless parts, just one complete uninterrupted movie viewing experience. With Cable, Nollywood fans that usually watch the movies online will have no concerns about Internet speed or buffering, just when the viewer is being captivated by the movie. About 80% of the movies to be shown on ‘Nollywood Hits’ have never been seen.

Some of the high quality productions to be featured on Nollywood Hits On Demand include ‘Somewhere in Africa’, ‘Mind Games’, ‘Unwanted Guest’, ‘Married But Living Single,’ etc., and will feature notable actors in the Nollywood Industry such as Genevieve Nnaji, Van Vicker, Funke Akindele, Majid Michel, Joke Silva, Omotola Jalade Ekehinde, Yvonne Nelson, and so many more.

“The distribution of Nollywood movies on major Cable networks in the U.S. is the next logical stage in the growth of the Nollywood Movie Industry. It’s a dream come true for the many talents in the industry and the vindication of a culture often marginalized in the western market; a real chance for bilateral acculturation and the consequent achievement of crossover appeal for the movies as a cultural export from Africa. Now the world will see the real life and style of Africa in the comfort of their homes”. – Perry Umoh, President & CEO, Brandcast Media Inc.

As a legitimate global distribution channel, Nollywood on major cable television networks will be an emergent answer to Nollywood’s rampant piracy and lack of investment and theatrical release interest. Nollywood’s presence on U.S. cable network giants will impact positively the industry’s revenue growth and address existing piracy issues. These select Nollywood movies will be available On Demand at $3.95 each.

of September, 2010.

Directed by Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen and produced by Isang Ubong-Awah ‘Bent Arrows’ storylines weave together to illuminate the human consequences of sexual abuse, betrayal, undue parental control and the male child syndrome on both the society, and specifically, on young girls.

For the first time in the history of movie making in Nigeria an independent soundtrack album was produced for a movie. The ‘Bent Arrow’ soundtrack album was produced by Nigeria’s foremost music producer, Mr. Cobhams Asuquo with different genres of music and featured notable Nigerian singers like Styl Plus of Olufunmi fame, the Rooftop MCs (Lagimo), Nikki Laoye, Stella Damasus etc. The 7 track album has songs like A Brighter Day Will Come, Loved From the Start, Bent Arrow a ballad and so many more.

A film in a class of its own ‘Bent Arrows’ was post-produced in South Africa to bring the work to international standards. The Bent Arrows movie and the Bent Arrows soundtrack album was funded by Alphabridges Limited presently managed by
Isang Ubong-Awah, a writer/ astute business manager with over five years experience in developing and running a media outfit.

Speaking on the movie, the producer Isang Ubong-Awah said ‘ Bent Arrows is a film that is not hideous about the realities of life, it shows that things may not always go the way we plan, and sometimes we will meet with circumstances that will
pull us down but if we have faith we can rise above any challenge’.

Written to connect with audiences within and outside Nigeria ‘Bent Arrows’ is set to be a yardstick for excellent and innovative entertainment.
