As with the past couple of years(2012, 2013) we’re going to delve into giving you the albums and projects from artists that are the most anticipated going into 2014 or rather those you should look forward to.

2013 gave us a nice collection of albums, some expected, some unexpected, some lived up to expectations, and others not so much. 2014 is no different, but we’ll attempt to bring this to you based on what we know going into the new year.

chidinma-EKILE

Chidinma – TBA

We have gotten confirmation from her label execs that yes there will be an album from Ms Kedike in 2014, and you have to say hers is probably one of the most anticipated for any female artist in Nigeria. She’s had a couple of very solid singles over the past year including Oh Baby, Kite, Jollie, and Bless My Hustle which features Phyno. With the buzz she has going, one has to say a lot of us are definitely looking forward to her album.

DAMMY-KRANE ON STAGE.,.,.,

Dammy Krane – TBA

From all accounts we were supposed to get an album from Dammy Krane in 2013 but somehow that didn’t work out. However he did drop one of the hotter jams of 2013 in Xteristics, and in addition to that released Lobatan & Gratitude. You gotta feel that if he doesn’t drop something this year we just might get tired of anticipating… unless of course he drops another hot jam.

YUNG L(1)

Endia & Yung L – TBA

I have both of them because we might get a joint GRIP Musik project or solo projects from one or both of them this year. Nothing has been set in stone as far as I know, but I get the feeling we’ll get to enjoy a very solid project from the GRIP Musik camp this year. MA2G maybe? It’s only almost 4 years late. Chopstix has been blazing beats all of 2013, Endia’s name has been buzzing since his single 48 and Yung L’s Red Rose is still on fire. It’s about that time yea?

MI
MI

MI Abaga – The Chairman

From all accounts MI Abaga had a relatively quiet 2013, with Ice Prince taking center stage in Chocolate City, but that doesn’t mean he’s fading. You know MI will always do something exceptional when it counts. Even though his last single Chairman didn’t really move the meter as some had expected it to do, you have to put it there that you shouldn’t underestimate MI and his 3rd album that is slated to be released this year, The Chairman, is still one to look forward to.

phenom 2

Phenom – Best Rapper Alive (B.R.A) [Mixtape]

Phenom’s B.R.A was supposed to be released late 2013, and actually as of december it was still expected at the tail end of the year. As we all know that didn’t happen so you know it’s definitely going to happen this year. Phenom, the KnightHouse general has been one of the promising acts to look out for since he burst into the scene. This is the year his project drops and it’s one that could potentially define the way his career will carry on from there.

phyno

Phyno – TBA

If I had to guess I’d say he’d title it Man Of The Year, but his camp has refused to confirm any album titles yet. But really it doesn’t matter what the album is called, you get the feeling it’s gonna be packing some major heat. His singles Man Of Year and Parcel have put him on the hottest act to watch list in 2014, so it’s natural that his project will be highly anticipated.

Praiz

Praiz – Rich & Famous

Finally! This will be the year we get an album from Praiz. I know we said that last year but this (as with last year) we are getting confirmation from his camp, and we’ve been told to be on the look out for a few surprises. Praiz arguably has the best singing voice in Nigeria. Even tho his last single Oshe which featured Awilo didn’t really thrill his core fans, you have to still put it out there that there’ll be a lot of folks waiting for his project. Including me :)

...

Ruby (Self Titled)

Ruby has the potential to surprise a lot of people this year, and with word that she’ll be putting out a self-titled EP, 2014 could be the break out year for the songstress. Her previous singles, Okay and Down have been doing pretty well and have gathered her a substantial fan base. For the talents Ruby possesses and the solid team we know she has behind her, expect this EP to be very solid. Even if it’s not mainstream afro-pop.

HorploadWorks_SeanTizzle_3

Sean Tizzle – The Journey

Sean Tizzle had an outstanding 2013, and it ended with him grabbing the Next Rated award at the Headies Awards 2013. His singles Sho Lee, Mama Eh and International Badman have been in steady rotation for pretty much all of 2013, and you have to figure that his album The Journey, will be one to look out for this year. If we are to go with history this could make him a bonafide star.

skales

Skales – TBA

So Skales just might be losing his buzz a little bit as we’ve seen single after single after single come and go, but still no album. Once again word on the street is that we’ll get to see an album this year, but just like 2012, and 2013, expecting to drop an album and actually dropping an album are 2 different things. With WizKid also dropping an album this year, it could go bad for Skales once again this year. However if this album does drop this year, it’ll be a long time coming and one that will definitely be one to listen to.

wande-coal-las-gidi-2

Wande Coal – Black Diamond

Wande Coal is finally out of the shadows of Mo-Hits and Mavin Records and now floats his own label, Black Diamond. His recent singles The Kick, Baby Face and Amorawa have been doing pretty well, even though he hasn’t quite hit his Mushin To Mo-hits form, but everyone knows the talent is there. As much as this album will be anticipated, everyone will be curious to see how it all comes out without one of his major mentors in music, Don Jazzy.

WIZKID (1)

WizKid – TBA

Star Boy! He just might be the artist of 2013 in terms of his impact to music, and many fans were extremely disappointed when his album scheduled for June, 2013 was postponed till this year. His singles Jaiye Jaiye, Drop and On Top Your Matter are arguably some of the hottest singles of 2013, and everyone knows WizKid rarely falls hand, so you know his 2nd album due out this year will be one that every music fan will want. Plus we might see even more international collaborations.

Yemi Alade

Yemi Alade – Miss Johnny or King Yemi Alade

Yemi Alade has the potential to be the top female entertainer by time 2014 is over and done with, and that is for real. Now we just have to wait and see if that potential actualizes, but you have to say so far so good. Her single Johnny has been a serious buzz since its release. Word from the label is that the album is definitely dropping this year. Titles are rumored to be Miss Johnny or King Yemi Alade, but no one has confirmed. Well even if the name is Moi-Moi music it’ll still be one I’ll definitely look forward to and so should you.

yung6ix

Yung6ix – 6’O Clock

This the year for Yung6ix. Just like Skales, you can only buzz very well for so long without dropping a major project before fans start to lose interest. A lot of his issues have been chucked up to the label, but you get the feeling that’s all about to end. His album is said to feature the likes of M.I, Olamide, Erigga and Yemi Alade amongst others, so you know it’s going to be a heavy dose of hip-hop with a south-south flavor. Definitely one to look out for this year.

Notable Mentions:

IllBliss – TBA

JayWon – Product of an Environment

Seyi Shay (Not 100% sure an album will drop this year)

Orezi

Harrysong aka Mr Songz

This is an area of putting out countdowns that I know is going to cause some controversy, but what the heck. We’ve never shied away from controversy, so why start now right?

So what is a Lyricist? Standard definition is: A lyricist is a writer who specializes in writing lyrics. For the sake of this post we’ll focus on Lyricist who specialize in writing lyrics for rap/hip-hop songs.

Warning! This is NOT top 5 most popular rappers or those that fill their songs with only punch lines so let’s our head away from the popularity contest.

Ill Bliss
Ill Bliss

5. Ill Blisss

Ill Bliss sometimes goes under the radar in terms popular hip-hop acts in Nigeria, and he’s not about the flash or the shine that comes with being in the game, but don’t get it twisted Oga Boss is sweet on the mic. With heavy story telling lyrics, that often blends english and igbo, his lyrics come out very clear and straight to the point. No need for forced punch lines and trying to impress.

We are not of the same make/Somehow Illy found that commercial break/You remind of drake without the mic skills, just a pretty boy rocking transgender jeans/ Go ahead look stupid with the eye brow piercing, Me & X just dey drop lessons /Feel free to learn, the question is when” – Deep Down with XYZ

.

Ghost (SDC)
Ghost (SDC)

4. Ghost (SDC)

Not to take anything from the other half of SDC, Tec, but when it comes to lyricism, Ghost so takes the cake in the group. Whether it’s doing the punch line thing or the story telling mode, Ghost leaves a serious mark on any track he blesses. Probably one of my fav verses from him is his verse in Wetin I Go Do, which he takes us through the initial conversation with a lovely lady. You can almost use that as a guide on how to approach a lady.

I wont type out every word, but here’s a microcosm of his skill. Other impressive showings include, Getting You from their Dreamer Project album, Speaking In Tongues & I Got That Yeah (Clone Wars 2) . Actually almost everything he’s been on.

Excuse me darling, I’m sorry I don’t mean to interrupt / I’m sure you’ve been approached by every brother in this club / so you’re used the attention / but I have a confession / when I saw you, wahali my heart stopped a couple of seconds / But what you working with is like a deadly weapon / You’re blessed, I’m guess your father is a reverend.” – Wetin I Go Do (The Dreamer Project)

.

kahli_abdu
Kahli

3. Kahli Abdu

One of the most respected names in Nigerian hip-hop, Kahli Abdu is highly underrated and is primarily because he is one of the few purists we have in the game. He’s really about the kpangolo ish, and stays true to the game. His Ministry of Corruption mixtape could be arguably one of the dopest mixtapes in Nigeria over the past decade. (Dont argue, just accept).

What’s even more impressive is that you get the feeling Kahli has barely even scratched the surface with what he’s put out, and it’s been a lot already. The one thing I love about Kahli’s verses is that it’s like a story. You can put in a mixtape, and listen a few short stories that you can feel, relate to or empathize with.

I lost my girlfriend over bullshit / I just let it go, I’m like i need a new chick / A few weeks in the scene and it’s useless / Truth is all these other girls are loser dawg, I cant do this / Now my ex is spreading rumors saying that I’m ruthless / How I got to this, I’m clueless” – WTF (Rebel Friday)

.

MI
MI

2. MI Abaga

You can’t argue with this one even if your life depended on it. Without a doubt, he is the most successful rap act Nigeria has seen. He was not the first, neither is he the ‘best’ but he’s the one that took it to a whole new level. As commercial as MI is, don’t get it twisted when it comes to lyrics, MI is a straight beast. So much so that he actually writes for a few others (we wont mention). He’s a lyricist & a song writer.

MI best lyrical work comes from his earlier stuff, and actually some tracks that might not even be hit songs per say. His word play, story telling, and sometimes mixing that with punchlines is unrivaled.

Now I see that I’m narcissistic, so sadistic, I must’ve missed it, over time it was me that was pulling me back. He said, I falsely accused you, then I used you, then refused your help to help me see, I was pulling me back. She said, I know I went ballistic, cos I don’t want to be a statistic, is this realistic, it’s been pulling me back. Then she said, I wanna do this again, so let’s pretend, close your eyes, count to ten, go back when, it was nothing that was pulling me back. ” – Pulling Me Back

.

Mode9
Mode9

1. Mode 9

Modo Baba! Did you really expect anything different? Mode9 has been a beckon of light all rappers look up to, and no rapper in their right mind will ever want to try (Just ask Ruggedman). But besides the diss track, Mode9 often gets passed on because he’s not commercial, but anyone that knows anything about hip-hop in Nigeria knows Modo is King, and anytime the time comes, Mode9 shows what he’s made of (check Naija cypher).

So what’s so special about Mode9? His lyrics are clear, well thought out, not always masked with punchlines, but more importantly he’s almost annoyingly consistent. You can’t wait for Mode9 to have a wack patch of form, and you’ll be waiting for a long time. Even what could be wack, is still better than a lot of acts out there.

Modo is King! Dont argue, just accept.

You rap for mechanics I rap and you panic/ leave you manic depressed damn it/ im too NICE,I expose you, now your covers compromised, shame on you / now pull your head warmer over your eyes / Take it off , eh hen !! Modenine is with the prize/Im bigger than you lyrically forget about size / heard your third albums gonna be your last, bye bye/ Hustling to sell it to shoe makers they no buy / waka waka waka was a track that nobody felt / OJB rap better than you, you need help!! / Know your secrets but I wont hit below the belt / Huuuuuu@@ do I hear a sight of relief?? Too easy” – Death Blow (Ruggedman Diss)

.

Notable mentions: Tec (SDC), Vector, Terry Tha Rapman, Loose Kaynon, Pryse, J-Berg.

So that’s all folks. You probably wont agree with all I have here, but that for you to argue, and me to watch :). Not to take anything away from others doing their thing, but these 5 right here really separate themselves away from the pack.

So tell me, who are your top 5 lyricist in Nigeria when it comes to hip-hop? Let’s hear it. Drop a comment.

Here is another dope Rap Mc called Jabbard. He comes on jaguda.com with No long talk featuring IllBliss and Bundled Locust. These joints are hard, Listen Up

(Jabbarad a.k.a Abdulwahab,) Is a Nigerian hiphop producer and rapper. He began rapping in 1998 in a group called ‘Underground Dwellers’ . The group never recorded a full LP, and in 2001 they broke up and Jabarad decided to go solo. He began production work in 2003, and in a short time acquired a client roster that boasted heavyweight artists like Ill Bliss, The Kalifate, Str8 Buttah, B Elect, Attitude, Vokal, Shangox, GQ to name a few.

He cites Dr Dre, Pete Rock, RZA, and Preemo as his production influences. On his style of rap, he says he refrences the WU and particularly likes their style because its ‘raw and naked…completely honest’
