World No Tobacco Day Symposium – Government Day Secondary School (GDSS) Wuse 2, Abuja May 31,2012
The Member States of the World Health Organization (WHO) created World No Tobacco Day in 1987 as a day to increase awareness of the negative effects of smoking. It is celebrated every year on May 31 around the world and WHO selects a theme each year. The theme for 2012 was “Tobacco Industry Interference” which I incorporated into the symposium. I celebrated May 31 by organizing a World No Tobacco Day Symposium for secondary school students.
The purpose was to provide an interactive environment where the students can learn from experts. I chose secondary school students because it is the period they experiment with cigarettes, which are highly addictive. The symposium comprised of 2 speakers,
the first focused on tobacco use & youths and the second on tobacco industry interference. There was a student activity where students brainstormed and presented ideas on how to curb tobacco use in Nigeria.
