As the Nigerian election comes up, candidates for the Presidential election are putting up their bid and proclaiming their intent to run. The two main ones that mainly got my attention for now are Goodluck Jonathan and Ibrahim Babangida (popularly known as IBB). Jonathan’s own is going to come later but for today, I want to focus on IBB.
I remember when rumors came out that IBB was going to run for president, I was hearing it with my mom and her first reaction was “Ah God Forbid Bad Thing!!!” I looked at her in shock and said “ahn ahn, mommy, its not that serious na” to which she replied, “believe me honey, it is!”
As a little kid, all I remember about Babangida was that his name was synonymous with thief, killer, and evil genius. I didn’t have much details apart from that but as you can guess, that was enough for me to not want him to be my leader.
Babangida was a military leader when he was in power. It was under his reign that the most tyrannical things happened. Who doesn’t remember MKO Abiola? That man was so much loved by most people in the nation and IBB had promised to step down for civilian rule under MKO. People truly came out and voted for that election but did he win? NO! Because IBB annulled the fact that most people had voted for him, sent him to jail and eventually was responsible for his death!
IBB was also responsible for the crappiness (yes that’s my choice of words) of our money. Before he came into power, the money was 2Naira to 1Pounds. By the time he was done, a pound was equivalent to about 100N (in fact, my uncle bought a brand new Honda car for 8000N and soon after that, the same kind of car cost over 300,000N) and it has only gone downhill from there, with inflation getting worse alongside the money going downwards.
Also, an esteemed reporter named Dele Giwa was sent a letter bomb under IBB’s reign. He chose to kill the man because he was going to do an expose on a woman who was allowed to escape instead of serving her jail time.
He has done so many more things but by the time I was told all these, I was joining my mother to say God Forbid! This is also a man who, when in power in the past, said to everyone that he was an “Evil Genius”. Now he comes forward and his slogan is “Experience Matters”. If experience matters, then people should look at the experience they have had when he was in power and think twice about even considering him at all.
I am not endorsing anyone with this article, but it is important to look at the past and make sure we don’t make the same mistakes as we did then. As the elections get closer, research your candidates and we will all pray to God to make the right decision as to our new leader. And most importantly, VOTE!!!
