Video: Bubble Bizu – Why Poor Man Dey Suffer (A Tribute To Fela Kuti)

Ok so I watched this when it randomly landed in our box, and even though it’s raw, I liked it. The realness of it gives it an edge. It’s from the artist Bubble Bizu, and the song is titled Why Poor Man Dey Suffer. It has a very fela-esque feel to it, which is why it’s dubbed as a Fela Tribute.

Enjoy it.

In this special tribute to the lyrical legacy of the great Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Bubble Bizu reinforces Fela’s prophetic message in this new, documentary-styled music video for ‘Why Poor Man Dey Suffer’.

This video appeals to each and every one of us, to our sensibilities, tacitly galvanizing us to embrace change – to speak up against – or in the very least show we care enough to highlight the fact that despite the abundance of natural resources, there’s still unimaginable suffering, oppression and poverty in Nigeria.

If you’ve ever wondered what the value of human life is in Nigeria, then you’d realize that we’re all very poor indeed. And whatever affects ‘the poor’, affects us all.

In light of recent happenings in Nigeria – the widespread corruption and moral decay in high places, and the absolute disregard for the value of human life – let’s take a minute to remember Fela – a man who dedicated his life to the emancipation of minds held in captivity by the shackles of fear, uncertainty, and poverty in Nigeria.

Let’s use our platforms to make Fela’s message echo, through this creative yet heart-wrenching tribute video performed by the up and coming Afrobeat musician, Bubble Bizu and directed by the maverick poet-cum-filmmaker, James Amuta.
