Top 20 Hottest Nigerian Artists of 2014 | #20-16

We’re in December people! And it’s time to reflect on the year that has been. Through the week we’ll be going through the 20 hottest Nigerian artists for the year 2014, and in this instance we’ll be considering October 2013 – October 2014. This list is based on the hits, impact, the general likability, and mass appeal of the artist through the year.

This is put together by the team, and I must say it’s been difficult to put it together, and it gave us a realization of just how many artists in Nigeria are doing really well. So just cos your favorite artist is not here doesn’t mean they aren’t doing their own thing well.

So without too much talk, let’s get into it.

20. Seyi Shay

Seyi Shay on stage 2

You can say that Seyi Shay really had a breakout year, with the release of her single, Murda. The song is a certified hit that she will be remembered for years later. Besides the solid hit, and the just as impressive video, she’s also had the single, Crazy which is pretty dope, as well as the sexy video for her 2013 single, Ragga Ragga.

She’s also had a solid amount of features, and all round she’s been buzzing throughout the year. Right here at #20 is Ms Murda (can we call her that?), Seyi Shay.

19. Runtown

Just over 12 months ago, RunTown was largely unknown in Nigeria outside the entertainment circles. Today he’s one of the hottest rising stars in Nigeria with some of the hottest songs of the year.

In just under 12 months, he’s released singles Gallardo (ft. Davido), Domot, Baby Answer, and My Matter with videos already in rotation for most. Add some of his hot features including “Emergency” by WizzyPro and “Bullion Van” by MI and you can see that he’s not resting on his loins, and it’s made him one of the most hardworking musicians of 2014. The Headies Next Rated nomination is definitely deserved.

18. Skales

Many thought Skales would be done and dusted when he was dropped from his original label, EME. But, surprise to a lot of fans he signed a hefty deal with Baseline Music, re-branded himself somewhat, and then dropped one of the hottest songs of the year, Shake Body. Along with that he put out good selling singles, Obi, and Give It To Me. His hard work has earned him the prestigious Next Rated at the 2014 Headies Awards, and it’s very well deserved even if it’s late in his career.

When you look through 2014 it’s hard to argue against Skales being one the names we’ll remember 2014 for.

17. Ice Prince

Ice Prince carried his hot momentum of 2013 well into 2014, releasing videos from his album, Fire Of Zamani, for N-Word, Jambo, and Whiskey. The videos have done well to keep Ice Prince’s name buzzing through out 2014. Ice Prince is one of the most hard working people in music, and with that he’s also put out numerous singles including but not limited to Tears 4 Naija, Can I Talk which featured MI and Joel Ortiz, and most recently Reply Brother.

All in all, it’s hard to call hot artists of 2014 without mentioning his name. You gotta fully respect his hustle. Ice Prince Zamani no come count bridge.

16. Timaya

Timaya has had a very solid year. Riding the wave of his 2013 hit, Ukwu into 2014 and also giving us a good remix to his tune, Bum Bum with reggae star Sean Paul, Timaya went international. He topped off his nice year with solid club tunes Sanko, Bow Down, and eventually his 5th studio album, Epiphany which from all accounts is a very commendable effort.

Timaya might not outright be the hottest artist of 2014, but he’s put in a solid shift for the year. And even more impressive is the fact that over the past 6-7 years there hasn’t been a time when a Timaya track hasn’t been one of the top clubs singles. That my friends is some consistency for you.

That’s all for today folks. Be sure to check back tomorrow for the continuation (15-11).

Who do you think will be in the top 15?

  1. Please Momsa or whatever your name is, don’t hate on Seyi Shay. She’s had a good year… as for the rest of the list so far, I’m surprised Ice Prince is at 17. top 10 I would think
