One thing that significantly changed this year in the Nigerian music is the inevitable break up of our darling duo Psquare.
We have all seen music groups break up and that’s really not a new thing. A quick flashback, the list is lengthy, Plantashun Boiz, The Remedies, One Direction, famous labels too, YMCMB, Mo’Hitz etc., at some point fell apart. However, the Psquare case was a little different from the rest. Firstly, the group is made up of two brothers, then again they’re not the first music group made up of brothers, The Jackson Five, Jonas Brothers, The Corrs quickly come into mind. But the stronger bonding factor would be that Peter and Paul are twins – identical twins. They shared the same umbilical cord. This must mean a lot.
Just as many people couldn’t hold the thought of our darling Psquare music powerhouse falling apart, we have to deal with it now as the break up has come to stay. Last year the twins threatened a split, fans cried, elders intervened and they mended broken fences and rough patches. ‘Sha’ it didn’t last long. We now speak of Psquare as a defunct music group. It’s really bad but I guess Nigerians don’t care anymore. In fact we have too much on our plates to start crying for Peter and Paul to get back together and make music. No time!
Let’s say the split has been successful, Peter Okoye goes by the moniker Mr P while his other twin and former partner chooses Rudeboy as a nickname. Both brothers have their individual record labels, and have also gone ahead to sign artistes (very little have been heard about them) to those imprints. Paul own Rudeboy Records while Peter heads a PClassic Records.
At the moment it is survival of the fittest between Peter and Paul who as a group won awards, sold out mega shows, conquered Africa and were in the right direction to take it global as far as the word goes. As there is with any break up, one person goes ahead to enjoy a blissful solo career after independence. I can’t help but imagine who between Peter and Paul goes ahead to have a rather fruitful solo music career.
What are the survival chances for Mr P and Rudeboy as solo artistes? 😦
I would have love to say please Peter and Paul settle your difference and get back to work. But it doesn’t matter now.
The basic truth is that Peter and Paul Okoye have revert back to become upcoming artistes with good experience and history. Paul during their social media fight and banter said his brother was performing at beer palours in America. 😂😂😂 It’s back to the beginning boys, oh they are both married men with kids.
So Peter is the more outgoing of the twins, he courts the media attention readily. He seems to be the more controversial one. In fact, we say Peter before we say Paul. Apparently, Peter shone more when there was Psquare, his energy in the group was evident.
That makes it very easy for him to move on rather easily. He has the largest social media following than his brother Paul by millions. That may explain why he has solo endorsements with KIA motors, Merrybet, Olympia Milk, a new digital distribution deal etc. He is like the D’banj of the Mo’Hitz era.
Peter’s success after Psquare will be largely based on his personality and razzmatazz. He will still cop more juicy deals but I can’t say much about his music. He has done a few solo features, which he failed to impress.
Rudeboy he calls himself but there ain’t anything rude about his personality.😞 The most aberrant thing about Paul would be his dreadlocks, he hasn’t been the one to be rude from the look of things.
Basically, Paul comes on as the shy guy, the one who prefers to work from behind the scenes. So far during the Psquare years he has always suffered the eclipse from his brother’s extrovert tendencies.
People say he is the one who does more of the singing while in Psquare. Now that theory would be put to a reality check and we hope it doesn’t bounce. Meanwhile he seems the most likely to register a hit song or two before his brother. This is adjudged from his claims ‘Bank Alert’ was supposed to be his solo debut before being deceived to reunite with Peter. ‘Bank Alert’ is the last Psquare hit I can remember. If Paul masterminded the song he can pull of the same fit again.
However, his lack of an engaging personality may be his bane. On the flip side might be his chance to have a solo shine where he takes all credits.
