As stated by the Power Africa Initiative started by the Obama Administration, 600 million people, 70% of the population of sub-Saharan Africa, is unfortunately without electricity. Just like the initiative appears to be important to President Obama- the president of the United States of America, the oldest society, the Power & Energy Society (PES), of the world’s largest professional technical association, the US-incorporated Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is getting involved in electrification of Africa by holding its first electrification conference for the continent of Africa from November 10-14 2015 in Tunisia. The theme of the conference is appropriately titled “Electrifying Africa: Affordable Energy Enabling Socio-Economic Development.” We believe that by gathering the right people to one location, we can work together to increase the number of Africans with access to electricity.
This Power Africa conference will foster a platform for participants from academia, electric utilities and industry to discuss experiences, best practices and associated technical developments that can be applied towards the electrification of Africa enabling socio-economic development. Power delivery regulations, investments and policies will also be addressed. Participants from all over Africa, Europe, and other regions will be present. More information on the conference can be found at http://sites.ieee.org/powerafrica/
The conference chair and organizers invite everyone involved in electrification in Nigeria and all over the world to join us at the conference, and submit abstracts for technical presentations and papers on several topics of relevance corresponding to electrification. Individuals in Nigeria who have designed and implemented solar, wind and other renewable energy projects off-grid have an excellent opportunity to present at the conference, and share procedures followed and lesson learned. Information on travel grants for attendees can be found on the website.
We also invite members interested in sponsoring the event to contact us. A number of good offers in exchange for sponsorship are available, including advertising on our website, brochures and special networking opportunities during the conference. We look forward to your participation and registration.
With best regards,
IEEE PES Power Africa Conference General Chair
