In case you’re not checking your calendar, “Chale, this is July already”. I hope you did well for yourself in the past months?
Some artistes in the music industry have had a stellar outing. Musically speaking, they have dominated the past six months of the year in reference to their efforts. These mentioned artiste in my opinion have shown that they are the “baddest” so far.
“Baba Nla” sits on top of this list. The reason is simple, he has taken the African sound to the global stage. The Star Boy worldwide boss scored a feature with American hip-hop superstar Drake on the chart topping single One Dance. Currently, Drake’s One Dance is still the number one song on Billboard Hot 100 chart. Wizkid also landed another international feature with UK’s pop star Tinie Tempah on Mamacita. There is no slowing down as Wizzy dished out an all American star studded mad tune “Shabba” featuring Chris Brown, French Montana and Trey Songz. I’m sure you also know he has an upcoming feature with Wale “Shine Vibes”. A round of applause, please.
In 2014 when Kiss Daniel stormed the music industry with his debut smash hit “Woju”, his calibration has since been on the rise. He has never missed shots, as he dropped hit singles back to back. “Laye” was a hit, “Good Time” was an even bigger hit. In 2016 the self-acclaimed Vado delivered a chart topping single “Mama”. The climax is his “NEW ERA” debut album that has been well received. No features on the album except label mate Sugar Boy; it takes big guts to do that. It is safe to say the “Mama” crooner is an A – list artiste now.
Awakening from maternal hiatus, “Dorodiva” Tiwa Savage came back in full glamour as the queen of the Nigerian music. Maybe she never even left, she came out of maternal duties to drop a critically acclaimed album “R.E.D” early this year. The album bears a good number of hits like “Darlin”, “Keys to The City”, “Standing Ovation”, and “If I Start to Talk”. Mummy Jamil has garnered international audience as her “R.E.D” was talked about on Old Man Ebro radio show. During her album promo in South Africa she received “Hero of The Month” award.
Falz aka “Falz the Bahd Guy” is worthy of mention. The rapper is best known for his accent and comic bars and punchlines been impressive in the past six months. He delivered one of the best album of 2015 “Stories That Touch”. Singles from that album are still rocking the airwaves and topping charts. A very memorable single is “Soldier” backed by a very creative video. It is still very fresh as Falz won the BET viewer’s choice BEST New International Act held in LA last month June.
The stylish Yemi Alade makes the list. Her sophomore album MAMA AFRICA is very much in high demand. She tried to capture the continent with a pan-African album drawing features with top African music acts from Sarkodie, DJ Arafat to Kenyan afro-pop band Sauti Sol. The leading female African act was again nominated this year for the BET Best International Act: Africa.
Worthy Mentions are:
Adekunle Gold – the YBNL singer has done very well with smash hit “Pick Up” and wedding song “Ready”. All is set for his GOLD debut album launch on the 28 of July.
Reekado Banks – Mavin Records Reekado has been impressive with his “Oluwa Ni” and most recently “Standard”. He is ready to drop a debut album in August.
Ycee – the new school rap star has made lots of impact this past months. From his very hot singles “Omo Alhaji”, “Su Mi”, “Condo remix” to solid deliveries on featured songs and endorsement deals. Omo Alhaji is stunting!
Olamide – Baddo has not been doing badly, great effort from him this year with “Abule Sowo”, “Who You Epp” and “Konkobility”. He maintains the standard.
Phyno – the Ezege1 has gained a lot of radio buzz with the release of his massive hit “Fada Fada” with industry friend Olamide. Still basking in the success, he has also dropped another number “E ure for me”. The indigenous rapper is not miss firing.
