In just about a few hours we would have officially said goodbye to the year 2018. It has been an awesome ye with lots of gbedu, science students were dieting, assurance was happening, Amaka was busy disappointing everyone, Wizkid infected Nigerians with fever and every other thing from the good, the bad and the ugly happened, because this is Nigeria.
As usual, we at Jaguda have gone through the pile to sieve out the very best Nigerian songs that were put out this year. The list is made up of the best songs in terms of cultural impact, party favourite, YouTube statistics and virality.
Without further ado, let’s get down to the list.
- Starboy ft. Wizkid, Terri, Spotless, Ceeza Milli – Soco
Africa’s biggest pop star Wizkid together with a few guys (Terri, Ceeza Milli, Spotless) came together to make a song called ‘Soco’. The bubbly beat was put together by fast-rising beatmaker NorthBoi. Slowly ‘Soco’ grew on everyone and it became a monster hit in the country. It is the most searched song on Google, most viewed Nigerian music video on YouTube all year long. Need I say more?
2. Burna Boy – Ye
In our list of hottest Nigerian artistes, Burna Boy was our number one, man had some of the best songs released in 2018. ‘Ye’ is one outstanding track from his ‘Outside’ album. The tune gained more popularity in the US when Kanye West put out an album of the same title. Everyone knows the line ‘this one na gbedu wey dey japata…’ Enough said.
3. Davido – Assurance
One man single-handedly drove the music industry bunkers with the word ‘Assurance’. the tune is one of the most played love songs this year, top 5 most searched on Google Nigeria with over 31 million views on YouTube. Davido inspired lots of folks to give assurance to whom assurance is due.
4. 2Baba – Amaka ft. Peruzzi
Before anything, let me say ‘long live the king’, 2Baba is still doling out major hits in 2018 that a long way coming. The Hypertek boss teamed up with young guys in the game Peruzzi, and SperoachBeatz to make the most talked about song ‘Amaka‘. Not only do we dance to the tune, but we can totally relate to the lyrical content.
5. Duncan Mighty – Fake Love ft. Wizkid
No one predicted a Duncan Mighty comeback this year but that is what we got, fortunately. The melody filled highlife singer switched up a little bit on his hit tune ‘Fake Love‘ with Wizkid on hand to amplify it’s musical goodness. Very soon lots of people were Googling for the meaning of ‘Tuama’ as heard in the lyrics.
6. DJ Spinall X Wizkid – Nowo
Popular celebrity disc jockey, DJ Spinall scored his first major hit this year with ‘Nowo’ featuring the Starboy. The highlight of the song was when Rihanna posted a dance video for the tune on her Instagram page after crossing 2 billion streams on Apple Music. Currently, the song grosses over 13 million views on YouTube.
7. Olamide – Science Student
YBNL boss is no stranger at serving controversial hit songs which often get the ban from NBC. This year it was ‘Science Student‘ that once again put olamide on the map and it’s undeniably one of the hottest songs out there.
8. Burna Boy – Gbona
Just as the lyrics buttresses Burna Boy was on fire this in 2018, ‘oluwa burna mo gbona feli’ the song continues. After a successful album man was till dropping hit singles and the ‘gbedu dey enter body’. A nice video was released to match the spirit of the song.
9. Tiwa Savage – Lova Lova ft. Duncan Mighty
Mummy Jam Jam had an absolutely stunning year and she is best remembered for her collaboration with Duncan Mighty titled ‘Lova Lova‘. Tiwa Savage worked magic with the Port Harcourt 1st son and we all loved it.
10. DJ Enimoney ft. Slimcase, Reminsce, Tiwa Savage – Diet
Straight from the stables of YBNL came the party banger ‘Diet‘ by DJ Enimoney. The tune is still a favourite to burst some shaku shaku moves with. The featured artistes came through with their A game. On the lighter note lot of Nigerians have lost weight thanks to the gospel of dieting.
11. Olamide – Motigbana
Hard work and consistency are the best ways to describe Nigerian rapper and YBNL boss, Olamide. That being said Baddo squeezed in another hit for himself with the Killertunes produced ‘Motigbana‘ Here the YBNL honcho showed off his singing skills.
12. Tekno – Jogodo
Triple MG music star nailed a major hit for himself with ‘Jogodo‘. The talented singer and producer made his own special retouch of Danfo Drivers hit song ‘Kpolongo’. It may have sparked plagiarism controversy but Nigerians loved it still.
13. Falz – This is Nigeria
Nigerian rapper and actor made ‘This Is Nigeria‘ his own peculiar and viral version of American rapper and actor Childish Gambino conscious tune ‘This Is America’. The tune grossed over a million views on YouTube in about 48 hours of release.
14. Mayorkun – Bobo ft. Davido
What a great year DMW artiste Mayorkun has had. The singer was able to own the year by releasing a smash hit ‘Bobo‘ with Davido. Subsequently, he dropped his ‘The Mayor Of Lagos Album’ which was well received. The mayor of Lagos threw in a wise saying ‘na money be fine bobo’.
15. Victor AD – Wetin We Gain
Fast-rising singer came from little recognition to owning one of the best nigerian songs of 2018. The promising music talent delivered the perfect hustler’s anthem this year. If we no buy the Benz, abeg wetin we gain?
16. Chinko Ekun – Able God ft. Lil Kesh & Zlatan
Indigenous rapper Chinko Ekun struck gold with his smash hit ‘Able God‘. Another hustlers’ anthem which did not take much time to go viral thanks to the dope beats by Rexxie. Can we say as you proceed into 2019, ‘no more insufficient funds’!
17. Wizkid – Fever
Only Wizkid can eventually turned a not-so-good song to a big hit. The trick was in exploring the chemistry with Tiwa Savage on the highly sensual ‘Fever‘ video. The Starboy kept us talking for days, of course the video went viral.
18. Davido – Nwa Baby
Head of the DMW crew released his highly anticipated tune which was greeted with lots of positive reviews. ‘Nwa Baby‘ made top 10 most search songs and song lyrics in Nigeria. Another lovely tune suited for a wedding party.
19. Kizz Daniel – One Ticket ft. Davido
Fly Boy Kizz Daniel made one major hit before the year rolled out. As a versatile artiste Kizz gave us ‘One Ticket‘, a nice narrative on being on the wrong side of love. He featured Davido on the track and one standout song from ‘No Bad Songz’.
20. Teni – Asakamaya
Teni has indeed such growth and rise in the past 16 months of her career. Sadly her physique was subjected to scrutiny and all but the sensational never stopped winning. The Dr Dolor Entertainment act gave us a jam and half in ‘Askamaya‘.
