What a time it is to be proud about being a Nigerian music artiste. It is evident that our music industry is flourishing in leaps and bounds. Nigerian music has gradually gained a lot of global acceptance poco a poco. Talk about international collaborations and awards, (although nobody has brought home a Grammy award yet, to my astonishment) sold out concerts outside the shores of Africa and many more. A lot of fortune has been bequeathed to some of our stellar artistes in terms of international affiliation and promo.
Let’s bring to your awareness some Nigerian artiste that have penned down international recording/management or distribution deal.
The self-acclaimed Kokomaster D’banj is probably the first contemporary Nigerian music act to put pen on paper to sign an international music distribution deal. The Oliver Twist hit maker landed the deal back in year 2012. Don’t forget he was also signed to Def Jam Records and Kanye West G.O.O.D Music.
Whayasay! The undisputed dancehall king last year 2015 was reported to have signed a music distribution deal with the largest reggae exporting music company VP Records. The music imprint houses artistes in the likes of Sean Paul, Shaggy, Maxi Priest, Mr. Vegas to mention but a few. All is set for the release of the singer’s debut album God over Everything GOE. He has recently dropped a single off his GOE album with superstar rapper Sarkodie No Kissing Baby.
Another dancehall great Burna Boy just a few months after Patoranking signed with VP records, also signed with Island Records, a subsidiary of Universal Music Group. The Soke crooner secured the deal also in 2015 making the first contemporary Nigerian act to sign with the international record label. He is currently having his album London tour in collaboration with Coko Bar.
Maybe you don’t know the Right Now singer as at 2015 inked a deal with Island Records a subsidiary of Universal Music Group as well as Burna Boy. It is also in the news that her hit single Murda will be re-mastered and released under the music label.
The Afrobeat singer in 2015 signed a recording/distribution deal with Tate Music Group. The deal is supposed to capture the American market, he has initially released an album Trance which is a selection of songs from his other albums Tabula Rasa and Slaves Merchants and Dealers under the imprint.
OBO has he is popularly referred to, earlier in the year 2016 clutched a $1 million with Sony Music Entertainment. Before closing the Sony deal the Aye crooner through his social media pages hinted his fans he would be making a life altering announcement, he later shared photos of himself in New York concluding his Sony Music recording deal. An aftermath of the deal was the birth of DMW his new record imprint which has Mayorkun and Dremo on it rooster.
The Nigerian music queen Tiwa Savage has been speculated to have signed an international management deal with Jay Z’s Roc Nation music imprint. Pictures surfaced online of herself and her record label boss Don Jazzy in a photo pose with Jay Z has further given much credence to the inking of a management deal with the music imprint. Roc Nation manages A-list artistes like Rihanna, Big Sean, J. Cole and many others.
The artiste who has a song with American rap star Fetty Wap title Your Number is one of the many Nigerian acts to have penned down a deal with international record label RCA a subsidiary of Sony Music. He shared the news via his Instagram page indicating he is the latest addition to the long rooster of artiste on the record label.
Yet again Sony Music seem not to get enough from Nigerian artistes, the entertainment giant has gone into contractual agreement with music producer and songwriter Mystro. The ace producer who is credited for Iyanya’s Kind Of Woman penned a music publishing deal with Sony/ATV.
