Kicking off our round ups of the best songs of the month, we have decided to narrow down the list to just 5 songs.
Unlike previous years, it seems artists are taking their time to monitor what their contemporaries and industry competitors are up to.
While some big names have taken up the challenge to open their 2019 accounts, we are yet to see or hear any major hit from some of them, almost feels like they’re no existent.
More interesting is the fact that music lovers/critics think 2019 is the year for Nigerian hip hop to thrive, thanks to the Martel Cypher that featured MI Abaga, AQ, Loose Kaynon and Blaqbonez. To put more weight on the argument, veteran Nigerian rapper, Modenine shared a surprise album titled “The Monument” which got impressive reviews.
Though he is yet to release his first official single for the year, DMW boss, Davido made major headlines in January, after his sold out concert at the O2 Arena in London.
Jaguda has decided to pick the top 5 songs in January.
Falz – Talk
Just as we were still gearing up for an amazing year, Falz released a new track titled “Talk”. The song upon its release sparked off a wide range of social media debate. While some frowned at the idea of him being compared to afrobeat legend, Fela, we cannot help but recognize Falz’s creativity in addressing social issues.
One thing that makes Falz stand out is the fact that he always finds a way of reinventing himself.
The award-winning rapper cum actor had this to say ‘There is a dire need for us to redefine the concept of humanity and morality. There is a pressing need for re-education and re-orientation of the people. For this is the only way we can restore sanity’. – Folarin Falana.
‘Talk’ is taken from ‘Moral Instruction’, the 4th solo studio album by Falz TheBahdGuy.
2Baba – Oyi
2Baba is like fine wine, the older, the better. What’s more fascinating about the legendary Innocent Idibia is how is is able to keep up with trends and staying relevant.
We hadn’t even settled in yet and 2Baba took up the mantle of leadership by unearthing a brand new banger titled “Oyi” on New Year’s day.
What makes 2Baba’s sound timeless is how he is able to seamlessly blend his Idoma dialect into mainstream pop sound.
Oyi is a follow up to his 2018 smash single, “Amaka” featuring DMW raving artist, Peruzzi.
Adekunle Gold Ft Simi – Promise
Days after our own industry celebrity couple, Adekunle Gold and Simi broke the internet following the news of their secret marriage, they decided to keep the momentum by sharing a new love song titled “Promise.”
The love-themed music video shows them publicly expressing their love for each other, this time, not in secret.
A promise to stay together forever and a happy ever after is the message in their new offering.
DMW x Davido x Zlatan – Bum Bum
Davido and his DMW gang are not the ones to slow down or come in last to a party. Davido teamed up one of Nigeria’s raving artistes, Zlatan Ibile to share a new banger titled “Bum Bum.”
The track was released as a build up to his just concluded concert at the o2 Arena in London.
Following the release of the banger, a befitting video was released directed by Twitch.
Tekno – Woman
Following his exit from his erstwhile record label, Triple MG, Cartel boss, Tekno, opened his accounts for the year with a brand new smash single titled “Woman.”
Tekno celebrates women and debunks the stereotype used on women, especially at a time women are said to belong to the ‘other room’.
Women are more, they have potentials, and Tekno’s new song buttresses on that.
Zlatan X Burna Boy – Killin Dem
Raving Nigerian street act, Zlatan Ibile had an impressive outing in 2018 and he spillover into 2019 with the same positive energy. Known for his seamless ‘Zanku’ dance and witty indigenous vibe, Zlatan is possibly one of the most relevant bubbling under acts to watch out for in 2019.
He teamed up with Burna Boy (who by the way also had an amazing 2018) to share a fire banger titled “Killin Dem” which is currently making rounds on and offline.
