This is Mary, one of the victims of the Nyanya Bomb blast in Nigeria on the 14th of April 2014…I met her the very next day at Wuse General Hospital in Abuja, and began working with her as her psychologist. She lost a leg, broke her hand and some ribs, but she NEVER stopped smiling! She would sit up on her hospital bed, with her makeup done and a smile on her face, waiting for me to come for our daily session!
The president and first lady visited her a few times and promised to take care of her, pay her bills, provide prosthetic leg for her and set up a small business for her….NOTHING WAS DONE!!!!!!!!…it was a church that finally got her out of the hospital, took care of her bills, got her a prosthetic leg and doing what they can for her….now they can’t do much, and the iron poking out her arm is due to be taken out, but the hospital has refused to remove them till she pays one hundred and fifty thousand Naira, which is about $ 800.00.. my aim is to help her raise the funds and also raise enough money to help her set up a small business.
You never know what hand life is dealing the person right next to you. Mary taught me the true meaning of gratitude and living everyday with no regrets, cos she was lucky to be alive. Most people at that motor park are dead, buried and long forgotten, but she was spared and for that reason, she is determined to NEVER stop smiling. I have worked with lots of patients, but no one has touched my life as much as she did.
