A South African judge has found South African Olympic and Paralympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius NOT GUILTY in the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, who was killed on February 14th, 2013.
The Judge Thokozile Masipa announced that although Pistorious was found not guilty of the murder charge, he could infact still face guilty charges for culpable homicide, or manslaughter, and other firearms offenses. Masipa made the decision that Pistorius did not intend on killing his girlfriend, Reeva, who was behind a locked bathroom door, and believed that it was not premeditated.
According to report from Yahoo News,
The prosecution, Masipa said in her summation, “failed to show requisite intention to kill the deceased, let alone premeditation.”
Masipa called Pistorius a “very poor witness,” saying he was “evasive” in the face of prosecution questioning. Still, in her opinion that did not warrant a guilty verdict on the charge of premeditated murder, or even dolus eventualis – the grey area between premeditated murder and culpable homicide.
The court will return shortly to deliver the verdict on those charges.
