Mode9 speaks on ‘Commercial’ album, “AGL”

Culled From HipHopWorldMagazine, where they sat down with Mode Nine and asked him some Questions, they focused on his upcoming first ever commercial album. He already has a Name for it, and also mentioned He has Donjazzy and Dammykrane on the Album.

Read excerpts of interview below:

A: You know what I actually take that back, I probably had more Hennessey than usual (laughs). People read it the wrong way. But the truth is, it’s nothing I haven’t already done, I have already done songs like “Cry”, “Nigerian Girls”.

The only thing is that when people say commercial album, immediately they think I’m singing. But no I don’t sing, I don’t know how to sing or carry notes, I don’t do that. What I did was I featured people in the main stream. I featured quite a few people in the Nigerian main stream. Some of the songs can come as across as being commercial compared to ‘Alphabetical Order’ as real hip-hop.

But I mean I put out ‘Alphabetical Order’ as real hip-hop and then I put out my own solo album and make it the same thing, what’s the difference. Why don’t we just say okay this album am going to show a little versatility rap on faster beats.

It’s an interesting album. Dammy Krane is on it, and we went all out. I have different sides and we party too. We dance ‘Kukere’. Forget sey we be Hip-Hop heads, we do that and it’s about having fun. I don’t listen to hip hop all the time. Some time, I listen to rock. Most of the time, its reggae. Reggae is almost like my favorite genre reggae alongside Hip-Hop.

Q: So is Don Jazzy is going to be on the project as well?

A: Yes he’s on it.

Q: Is there a name for the album yet?

A: ‘AGL’. I studied building technology so I decided to inculcate stuffs that I studied into the music. AGL. Above ground level. It’s just like I’m not making music underground, instead I’m making music above ground level. Its business if people are not feeling this, give them this. I might just wake up one morning and say I’m going to do a reggae album.

  1. I guess I’m the only one that thinks mode 9 is overrated. Plus he always looks like he’s from 1998…he must be on that windows 98 swag.

Sorry 9, I’m not a fan. Good luck on your album and stuff.

  2. Hahahahaha! E be like say lengendary da vinci mode a.k.a mode 9, is tired of doing hiphop. When M.I2 came out some idiots said M.i abaga his not a true hiphop great. But those idiots forgot that music is a buisness. Music is all about the monetary value, modo has been into hiphop for donkey years but he is not rich, permit me to say mode9 is broke, cuz he has no endorsement deal. But i think going commercial we really put money in his pocket. Music is all about money, u can ‘t be doing hiphop that we never put food on your table. Lesson to all upcoming rappers, don’t be scared to do commercial music, as long as u make the money because this is your career.

  3. I think its time i stop listening to ur music mode9 cus since u cant dop the game then let the game dop u lil nigga i can see u gat nothing to offer dude. U are a disgrace to hardcore hiphop!

    • Sorry dude, sm of u sound disrespectful. Mode rocked a GLO endorsement b4 u knew dt word. Music is 1st done 4 inner satisfaction, money is secondary. U don’t feed dis dude. D cool video he shoots, u didn’t Pay 4. Pls byepass d comment link if u aint got ish 2 say. I mean save it 4 d nxt rapper. Luv u

  4. u guys can say all sort of shit. . . . Mode 9 is still d best rapper in 9ja. I only respect two mc’s in africa, mode 9 and proverb of south africa. But my problem with mode 9 is his slangs. His slangs is too much dat sometimes i dnt understand his lines. Proverb uses slangs too but i understand most of proverb’s lines. My advice 4 mode 9 is, he should try to reduce his slangs a lil bit to wat we can understand n learn 4rm. Guys! wat do u think?

  5. 1st of i give maximum respect to d 1st & 9th element of Nigerian hiphop[MODO],ya’ll catz remain disrespeckful 4 all i care, but d sour mouthing dosnt takes Mode’s place 4rm being best&consisting real hiphop rapper on air rite nw.I respeck every oda cat in d game, but Mode9 stil remains d Nigerian rap messiah, not really a big fan of his though(Proverb of South Africa’s remains ma best rapper in Africa)but shoot d 9th element made me proud on his joint with Canibus”superhuman”by ripping d jacker.Pls stay duck taped up if ya’ll dont kno d game’coz money comz nxt afta d passionate luv.No offence.
