Our legislative agenda is on course – Remi Tinubu

Senator Oluremi Tinubu is representing Lagos Central Senatorial District at the Senate on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). At the sixth edition of her Town Hall meeting themed, “Rekindling Hope,” recently, she told journalists that APC is a broad coalition of progressives on rescue mission. RAZAQ BAMIDELE, brings the excerpts:

Critical time

This is a critical time in the life of our nation. Terrorism, insecurity, natural disasters, extreme poverty and mass unemployment have made life complicated and difficult for most citizens in Nigeria. I, however, believe that our humble efforts can rekindle hope, even in these troubling times in the life of our nation.

As I have always said, together, we can collectively achieve social change and bring smiles on the faces of others.

Constitution review

At the resumption of plenary this year, the Senate set its legislative agenda. Chief amongst them is the passage of the Petroleum Industrial Bill (PIB), Amendment of the 1999 constitution and the reform of the Police Act among other issues. By now, we are aware of the interest being generated by some of these issues.

However, those of us in opposition are committed towards ensuring that the collective interest of all citizens is not mortgaged for the interests of a powerful few. We will also ensure that we speak out on issues which affect us all. For example, our consistent demand for state or community policing, has not been adequately addressed. But community policing is reflected in the Bill to repeal the Police Act 2012.

And, as a member of the Constitution Review Committee, I will continue to make efforts to affirm our party’s progressive views on various issues, including special status for Lagos, devolution of powers, fiscal federalism, justifiability of social and economic rights and gender issue. Among others, our party will continue to work towards actualizing constitutional amendments on creation of local councils, true federalism, creation of state police, removal of the Land Use Act and provision of constitutional role for our traditional rulers.

All Progressives Congress, (APC)

We are all aware of the steps that leaders and founding fathers of our noble party, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN),have taken to join hands with other progressive parties by forming the APC. The new party is the broad coalition of progressively minded politicians on a mission to rescue Nigeria from this present slow pace of development.

Therefore, we should all look forward to the future with great optimism and ensure that this divine opportunity to make right, the wrongs that have plagued us for so long become a reality. It is like giving us a second chance to undo the wrongs of the past and build a future of wealth and prosperity for this and future generations.

We remain committed towards the actualization of ACN’s populist ideals that can restore citizen’s hope across Nigeria. We must all work towards turning around the prevailing situation of hoplessness, joblessness, poverty and other difficulties across Nigeria by actively embracing progressive reforms. Together, with unity of purpose, we can all make change to happen in Nigeria and rekindle hope. As progressives, where we stand on issues today, matters for posterity. We can all work towards achieving progressive goals; pool our strength together with one clear goal of developing our society through good governance, thereby accomplishing a lot for our teeming masses.
