An Icon Passes On; Novelist Professor Chinua Achebe Dies at 82

World Renowned Nigerian author Chinua Achebe has died at the age of 82. He died at a hospital in Boston, Massachusetts after battling a long illness. He had been living in the US since 1990 following injuries from a car crash that left him paralyzed from the waist down.

His home state of Anambra, in south-eastern Nigeria, was in mourning for its “illustrious son”, the spokesman, Mike Udah, said.

One of Africa’s best known authors, the 82 year old’s debut 1958 novel Things Fall Apart has sold more than 10 million copies and was translated to over 50 languages world wide. In addition some of his best known works Arrow of God, No Longer at Ease, Anthills of the Savannah, and A man of the People were world wide successes.

The writer and academic wrote more than 20 works – some fiercely critical of politicians and a failure of leadership in Nigeria.

His latest (and what will be his final) work, There Was A Country was a personal account of the Biafra war through his eyes.

Truly today we have lost an icon. May his soul RIP.
