2013 is in full swing, and now that we’ve had a moment to settle down from the celebrations and new year resolutions and what not, it is time to get to work. With 2012 setting a new standard for Nigerian music, we can only expect that 2013 will bring bigger and better things for the industry. No half stepping for anyone really.
Just like in 2012 where we saw some albums come out of nowhere, EME Compilation, Solar Plexus etc, we’re definitely going to see some surprise albums this year also.
So without too much long story, let’s get right into it. In alphabetical order:
BANKY W – RnBW
So Banky was supposed to drop this album on valentine’s day last year but ended up moving the date indefinitely till “the situation in Nigeria stabilized.” We’ll allow that excuse if he does actually release the album this year without any more teasing. There’s 4 singles out already, Setting P, Lowkey, Good Good Loving and of course everyone’s fav, Yes/No.
So really, unless the world ends (again), there’s no reason why Banky W shouldn’t release the RnBW album this year. It’s almost 4 years now since The W Experience. How long do we have to wait ehn?
BURNA BOY – L.I.F.E
If you were Burna Boy, you couldn’t ask for a better 2012. The singles Party & Tonight seriously put Burna Boy on the map and he went from “upcoming” to big star in almost a blink of an eye. Now that’s how you make a splash.
Now that the singles are in circulation, and the Burn Identity mixtape has been floating for the past 1+ years, it’s time for that album to drop. L.I.F.E is the titled as of today but we all know how that can change. Regardless of the name, the content is what we are interesting in.
DAMMY KRANE – TBA
Is this the year we see an album from one of the brightest stars, Dammy Krane? The answer is a strong Yes. At least that’s what we’re told from our sources. Dammy krane has the solid singles on deck already, and even some special recognitions already – Rookie of The Year at the Headies and taking part in the 2012’s Hennessey Artistry. So really? There’s no reason why we shouldn’t see the album this year.
DBANJ – MR ENDOWED
This is one that we’re not 100% sure about especially after the Mo-Hits split up, but we can speculate because the album was supposed to be released last year, and it’s only natural to expect it this year.
Dbanj has had his ups and downs in 2012, but never for one bit did anyone doubt his star power. He’s still one of the biggest names in African music, and an album this year will either catapult his international status or dwindle down his level. We’ll have to wait and see, but you know with G.O.O.D Music on deck you cant really envision an album from him going totally wrong.
DJ NEPTUNE – EVA BLAZING
This is another album that we didn’t get to see in 2012, but we’re sure to get in 2013. The singles 123 HipHop, This Gbedu, Skoobi Doo has been hitting on all cylinders since 2010 so it’s only right that this album drops this year. I mean there’s no excuse again. If not we’ll vex and kidnap his laptop.
But on the real, this album promises to have a serious squad of artists on it, just like we’ve seen in the past singles. Expect this to be as titled, Eva Blazing!
IYANYA – DESIRE
Iyanya arguably had the song of the year last year in Kukure. The song, though released in 2011, literally destroyed parties and clubs once it was played. Raise your hand if don’t Etighi when this song comes on. The follow up singles, Your Waist & Flavour didn’t quite have the same impact, but were still hit singles in their own right.
So comes after you have the song of the year? The album of the year maybe? We’ll have to wait and see, but we certainly hope that the album which drops soon lives up to the high standards Iyanya has set for himself. Something tells me it will.
MAY D – TBA
May D started 2012 on a high note, rolling with P-Square on the remix of Chop My Money with Akon, and soaring to greater heights under square records. But that all came to screeching halt when he was dropped from square records due some “disputes” in direction, and management. That didn’t slow May D down though, as he set up himself nicely, and released 2 additional singles to keep himself in the buzz.
Word is that momentum is not likely to take a back seat, as there are plans to release an album this year. If you’re a May D fan, this has to be great news as it’s great to get an album from a truly talented artist.
MI – THE CHAIRMAN
The Chairman!! Is there a year that goes by that MI doesn’t release some project? Let’s see… 2008 Talk About It, 2009 Illegal Music, 2010 MI2, and 2012 Illegal Music 2. He’s one of the hardest working artists out there, and even if you don’t hear much from him in a few months, you know for sure he’s cooking something on the stove.
The Chairman will MI’s 3rd official album, and has the potential to solidify him as one of the best artists in his generation. Word on the street is, a single drops before the end of the first quarter and the album drops later this year. Hopefully we don’t have to wait like we did for IM2.
PRAIZ – TBA
Praiz arguably has the best voice of any male RnB artist in Nigeria, and with songs I Love You, Rich & Famous and features on MI’s Praiz & Bez’ Stupid Song, it’s hard to argue against that.
2013 has to be the year Praiz drops an album, and all reports are pointed towards that happening. We expect this to be an album that defines the rest of Priaz’s musical career. Will he go a bit commercial? or stick to what he does best? We’ll have to wait and see.
TIWA SAVAGE – TBA
Is there a reason why Tiwa Savage doesn’t have an “official” album yet? Actually isn’t it hard to believe that she doesn’t have an album yet? It almost seems like she’s had an album in rotation for while, but surprisingly she doesn’t.
However, the Mavin records artist has revealed that she will be in fact releasing an album this year. It’s about damn time don’t you think? Yes we think so too. So Tiwa, don’t post us like last year. Drop and album and give all of us something to rock to going into 2014.
WAJE – THE AFRICAN SOUL
Here is another person that is SERIOUSLY overdue for an album. Yes I wrote that seriously in caps to emphasize how serious the seriously is. She has a voice made in heaven, the energy, the soul, and the IT factor that captures Nigerians like not many can do. So really, ogini? Make we consult oracle?
The singles Oko Mi & I Wish, both released last year gave us fans some hope that the album is coming soon, and indeed we’re surer than ever that it is around the corner. We might even see it before the end of the first quarter this year. Then again, you never know with these things, but hopefully all falls in line and we see this highly anticipated album.
WANDE COAL – BLACK DIAMOND
Mushin To Mo-Hits seems like a distant memory now. The album that shot Wande through to the stars is about to 4 years old. Yep it’s been that long since we got an album from Wande.
You can argue that last year probably slowed him down a bit with the break up of Mo-Hits and D’Prince dropping his debut album and all, but now this is the year we definitely have to get something from Wande Coal. And that we will if rumors are true. The album tentatively titled, Black Diamond, should drop this year and then we’ll know if Wande can live of the high level of expectation we’ve set for him. Indications from the last 3 singles say he probably will….especially with Don Baba on deck.
WIZKID – TBA
Star Boy! International Star Boy! Wizkid’s second album has the potential to really rock the international scene and introduce Nigerian music on a bigger platform. Well continue to introduce.
WizKid definitely cant be accused of being complacent as dude has been doing his work even after a highly successful debut album. Features, singles, freestyles, you name it, he’s done in 2012. So you know he’s not planning on breaking that habit for the album.
Some of the big names he’s rumored to be working with include, Akon, Tinie Tempah, The Game, Young Jeezy, and (shhhh don’t say too loud) maybe even Chris Brown. Whether or not the album will actually drop this year is not 100% clear but sources have confirmed that this year is the target. So brace yourselves people.
YEMI ALADE – TBA
Yemi Alade has really set herself up nicely for a heavy album in 2013. The singles Ghen Ghen Love, Uche Face, Bamboo & Show Me have really told us that Yemi is not here to play with anyone. All these single released in just about 6 months. Now imagine what she can do with most of 2013 on her side.
She has the potential to really do some damage with the album in 2013. If all goes according to plan, she just might, or at least give it an honest shot. We’ll have to wait and see though.
Well there you have it. 13 albums we can’t wait to spend out N150 or $5.99 on in 2013. Oh did I say 13? Sorry I threw in one extra to make it 13+1. Sue me, but I couldn’t get myself to cut anyone of these albums out.
There will definitely be many more albums in 2013, and the anticipation level will definitely change as the year goes by, but based on 2012 momentum and word on the street, these are the albums we feel are the most anticipated for 2013. It certainly doesn’t mean these will be the only good albums in 2013.
Note: All album names are tentative and could certainly change, and for those titled TBA, it means it hasn’t been named or we just don’t know the name.
Peace out & keep supporting Nigerian Music. Bless!
