It was a fun-filled, highly social event at Café Royale last weekend when Coca-Cola Nigeria, headline sponsors of the Big Brother Africa Stargame, hosted fans for a live viewing of the reality programme’s season finale. The 91 days of drama, excitement and suspense came to a grand end as 22-year-old South African, Kaegan, won the star prize of $300,000 (about N48 million)

Keagan won the highest number of votes from 7 of the 15 participating countries to emerge the winner. Five of the final six remaining contestants were evicted one after the other, leaving him victorious and automatically propelling the young intern to continental stardom. The other evicted housemates were Namibian musician, Lady May; Kenyan rap star, Prezzo; Talia, a female graphics designer from Zambia; Kyle, a Ugandan reporter; and a self-styled entrepreneur, Wati, who hails from Malawi.

Although the Kenyan appeared to be a sure bet for the star prize, boisterous cheers from the event attendees followed the announcement of Keagan as the winner, making it the first time South Africa representative would win the competition which has now run for seven consecutive years. Keagan survived two eviction attempts and on one occasion, had the opportunity of using his power as the Head of the House to save himself. The unpredictable young man had entered the house as a regular housemate but moved from Downville to Upville while his partner, Lee, was evicted only five weeks into the show. He once faced the possibility of being disqualified following his clash with fellow housemate Junia. However, he persevered and held on to win the biggest prize in entertainment on the African continent.

The much-anticipated season’s grand finale had ace performances from Azonto King, Ghana’s Sarkodie, Uganda’s hip-hop powerhouse Navio, South Africa’s MC Khuli Chana and Nigeria’s multitalented superstars rapper Naeto C and as well as singer D’Banj who mesmerized the audience with his sensational global hit, Oliver Twist.

The Big Brother Africa franchise is the only pan-African television reality show that unites the continent. This just-concluded edition had 28 regular participants and 7 celebrities. Popular Nigerian female pop star, Goldie, was a strong contender for the ultimate prize but was knocked out of the show with about 20 days left. This year’s edition also saw the highest followership, audience participation via text messaging, internet and social media.

Olufemi Ashipa, Brand Manager, Cola, Coca-Cola Nigeria, reiterated that the Big Brother platform provides unique reasons to believe in the African spirit. “The great spirit of togetherness and perseverance exhibited by all the housemates are wonderful reasons to believe that Africa is indeed great, and will continue to be greater. We at Coca-Cola will continue to celebrate and inspire the continent with reasons to believe and refresh, through platforms like the BBA and others that touch and connect with wonderful people therein.”
Coca-Cola proudly refreshed the 35 housemates with its products, encouraging housemates to showcase their African heritage by preparing delicacies from their individual countries. They also participated in sporting activities aimed at keeping them fit, team-work and communal celebration when they win or lose. Coca-Cola believes that each individual that came on Big Brother Stargame has been a source of inspiration to viewers. The key drivers of happiness, which are: being together, being active, and being in the moment, among others, were fully expressed throughout every facet of this reality television show.
