Goodluck Jonathan Suspends Nigerian International Football For 2yrs

In what seems to be the most puzzling decision in recent Nigerian Sports history, Nigeria President Goodluck Jonathan has suspended the national soccer team from international competition for the next two years following their poor performance in the World Cup, a senior adviser said on Wednesday.

“Mr President has directed that Nigeria will withdraw from all international football competition for the next two years to enable Nigeria to reorganize its football,” Ima Niboro, a special adviser to Goodluck Jonathan, told reporters.

“This directive became necessary following Nigeria’s poor performance in the ongoing FIFA World Cup.”

Nigeria left the World Cup competition with just one point, which it earned in a 2-2 draw with South Korea. Nigeria lost to Argentina 1-0 in its Group B opener and fell to Greece 2-1 in a game turned by the first-half expulsion of midfielder Sani Kaita.

The Super Eagles haven’t won a World Cup match since 1998. The Nigerians went out with two losses and a draw in 2002 and did not qualify for the 2006 World Cup

  1. If this is true, then Goodluck has got it all wrong. What happens to the thieving officials. The problem with our football is not that of dearth of talent but non availability of sound administarors.

  2. I that so….eh…..Mr President, if our team cannot play for 2 years then every politician in the country cannot go on vacation for 2 years.(Including you Mr President) In which they will use that time to solve many of our country's problems. He cannot punish the team and our people for the corrupt bureaucracy that is the Nigeria Football Federation.

  3. What has soccer got to do wth the office of the presidency. Aren't there more important issues that the president should be focused on. The fact that he has time to make decisions about soccer puzzles me.

  4. It doesn't get any DUMBER than this, what's next for him? Ban Nigerians from coming back in December because loads of robberies occur in December and there are enough targets for the robbers?
