I stopped by a nearby Barnes & Noble’s and picked up the April issue of Essence Magazine. Now I will honestly say that Essence is not my first magazine of choice but I couldn’t help but grab a copy just off of the colors on the cover. Actress Zoe Saldana poses in a gold lame top paired with dark denim jeans, in front of a deep purple background with the word ESSENCE also in a vibrant gold. I love colors especially when they are eye-catching! Eventually I flip through the pages and realize that the issue was African inspired…YES, please believe I took a seat to read the magazine. What did I come across? An editorial fashion spread full of African inspired garments. What else did I see? A page dedicated to African designers? And who was among them? Miss Lola Faturoti from Nigeria, Mataano, headed by identical twins, Ayaan and Idyl, from Somalia and jewelry designer Twiga Mbunda from Tanzania.
If you don’t know about these designers, why don’t we get familiar? Browse through some of their work below.
