A teenage girl serving as a househelp in Asaba Delta state buried a new born baby boy in a shallow grave a little while after delivery. The incident occurred few days ago behind Direct Labour Agency (DLA) road in Asaba.

The new born baby however survived the ordeal and has since been transferred to St. Joseph’s Catholic Hospital, Asaba where he is receiving treatment. No one as of yet knows who the father of the baby is.

State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Charles Muka, an Assistant Superintended of Police (ASP) confirmed the incident and told VANGUARD on phone yesterday that “the Police ‘A’ Division is handling the matter. The mother and child are in that hospital. But I want to make it clear the mother is under police custody even at that hospital because we are going to prosecute her for the criminal act”, he stated.

This here is clearly a case of ignorance, fear, and the stigma that goes with having a child out of wedlock in Nigeria. A similar incident was reported a couple of months ago, where a woman dumped her baby into a pit latrine shortly after delivery. Only God knows the countless number of similar cases that go undiscovered.

The solution to this trend runs deeper than criminal prosecution. The grand solution will be the education of our young ones, and others in the community, and to help those in need of help instead of creating situations where the women feel helpless and desperate.
